Madrid versus Barcelona

We are staying in Malaga on the southern coast for a week and will have a few days to spend in either Madrid or Barcelona - this is a one time trip and we can only do one of those cities. With the only notation that art is not our do all and end all reason for travel , which city would you recommend?

They are two cities with different flavors. Barcelona is famous for its modernist architecture. Madrid has beautiful architecture also with Belle Epoque style, art deco style. From Madrid you can easily do day trips to Toledo and Segovia. Read about these day trips in the top questions of the Madrid forum.

Do one city now and come back on another trip to see the other city.
