Car hire - Argus Car Hire - be careful

Rented a car through Argus Car Hire in Aug 2010 to collect from Almeria airport.

Booking process and price all ok, customer service absolutely terrible.

Our flight was delayed by 6 hours and when we arrived at the airport the local hire company didn't have a car for us. Apparently the small print in the Argus T&Cs says you have notify the local hire company yourself when you are delayed for more than 2 hours. This is pretty difficult when you are stuck at the departure gate and don't have any contact details for the local hire company!

After being given a van for the day I had to return to the airport (4 hour round trip) and waste a whole day of my 1 week holiday waiting around at the airport to find they still didnt have a car for us. It transpired that they didn't have a vehicle for me in the first place regardless of the delay!!!!!

The Argus call centre told me to return the van, look for another company at the airport and that they sort something out on my return.

I had to pay for the one day I had the van with fuel costs and take out a second excess waiver insurance policy from the new hire company. When I called the insurance company booked through Argus from the airport and they told me that the policy from Argus was not transferable and that Argus should refund the money.

All very stressful when traveling with a heavily pregnant woman!

On my return when I wrote to Argus and gave them copies of all the paper work. They took 3 weeks to reply after regular and persistent chasing from me with a ridiculous response that they would refund nothing as I should have been happy with the van as it was more expensive than my original booking and that the insurance would have covered me on the second booking (despite the insurance company saying it didn't). I wrote back to complain again and ask for details on how to escalate my complaint they simply replied to say there was nothing more to say on the matter.

All I was asking for was a refund of the insurance and the original booking fee as I had been forced to make an independent booking outside of Argus. Why should they have earned any money out of this and leave me out of pocket?

What's most annoying is Argus's general obnoxious approach and complete disregard for our inconvenience. What terrible customer service.

I wish there was something I could do to take my complaint forward but I think all I can do is warn other prospective customers!!

As with all above posts, I would like to say Please AVOID this company. Their website shows all the main rental companies but what you get is some company, operating from a junk yard, with dodgy cars, terrible staff, vans that are supposed to bring you to your car every 10 minutes but don't show up for an hour, and on top of this they steal from you.

They do not just block your credit card but actually take the money for deposit off your account, they confuse you into paying more for things you have already paid for and they charge you for a full tank regardless of the amount of diesel you have used.

Please travellers, please stay away from them. I am surprised nobody has actually shut these criminals down. Our rental was at Malaga Airport.

We are keeping watch over credit card transactions and have already instructed our Credit card issuer to watch them.

Further to my message of 18 october the £800 euro was refunded to the card on 18 october, a full two weeks after it was taken off. We are keeping an eye still on our mastercard as money was taken (small amounts) from other people in the weeks after their deposit was refunded.

I forgot to mention that the company we were allocated through Argus (advertised on the website as Malaga Airport Car Hire) was called Marbesol. As there are about 7 pages of reviews on this company of which one or two positive and the vast majority negative, that is another reason not to use Argus. You could be getting a car from Marbesol and you do not want to spoil any part of your holiday. So, please avoid Argus, Malaga Airport Car Hire, and Marbesol.

I too have been misled by Argus car Hire, it cost us an extra 83 euros. More worryingly is the state of the car we were given by Marbesol in Malaga. We highlighted 11 dents and scrapes on the car before we left the scruffy yard where the business is run from. This was more than they had marked on their picture of the car. How many more problems do these cars have that can't be seen. Will it take a fatal accident before brokers like Argus are regulated!!! I had used Argus several times before without any problems but I now realise how lucky I have been. If we all keep on warning people to avoid them like the plagus perhaps it will affect their business. I am going to keep trying to expose them.

We have been too at Manchester Airport! - CHECK THAT YOU ALSO HAVE TO PAY A £250 DEPOSIT at time of booking! This is on the confirmation email but not before - they have since replied to my complaint saying its in the ts & cs somewhere!!!

We were also tripped up by this company after booking a car on saturday night on argus car hire - at 9.30pm for the following morning at 8am from Manchester Airport. We recieved the confirmation emails and thought nothing of it.

We missed a call at 7:30am in the morning and we rang it back at 7:50am on the way to the airport only to be told we will not be getting a car and when i asked why we weren't the lady replied,

"We aren't a 24 hour business!"

So i asked why they had a 24 hour booking service then - she got the hump with this and said that she will get us a car for 12pm!

Neadless to say we cancelled the booking with them and booked another car - we are still waiting for the refund!....

Very bad customer service, never going to recommend this ever again, was charged for a booking online, got a voucher. Presenting at Cork airport, was again charged for the car, plus deductible for the car (i had paid for full insurrance online), so they wanted me to pay for the car twice. Went to one of the other car rentals in the Airport, no extra charges and cheaper.

Have hired several times in the past through Argus with no problems. HOWEVER, on a recent trip returned the car to Zurich airport, clean & tidy, only to get charged an extra £512 for cleaning! Thought this had to be a mistake & contacted Argus only to be told they would not get involved in charges & it was up to me to sort it out. Argus obviously think it is O.K. for their customers to be shafted. Customer service is appalling & I will not be using Argus again. The car hire company involved is Avis/budget.

For your info.: Argus Car Hire just gives you the cheapest Car Hire Company.They have no cars.

It is the same when you want to fly cheap , you go with Low Cost like RayanAir, you are treated a bit like catle , but it is cheap and you mostly arrive on time.

You can not have your cake and eat it.
