Which do you want? Cheapest or comfortable? The two are normally mutually exclusive. Bus for cheapest, train for most comfortable.

Cordoba is easily done as a day-trip from Seville, so rather than continually moving about you would probably be best staying in Seville and then moving on to Granada. It's difficult to advise on how much time you should spend in each place without an idea of how much time you have available overall.

The AVE high-speed trains run between Madrid and Seville (stopping at Cordoba on the way). For travel between Seville and Granada you are probably better using the express coach service, the train service isn't very good (although a new AVE service is opening, when are you planning to come?).

You can get significant discounts on AVE tickets by booking online in advance (bookings open 62 days before date of travel) at:

www.renfe.com

There is a good, concise, easy-to-read guide to buying rail tickets online here:

I would see whether to book Barcelona to Seville or Granada first and then work out best prices and timings.

You can go to Cordoba as a stop over between the two major cities and leave your bags in the bus lockers. Cordoba is really all about the fabulous Mezquita and you could spend just a few hours in Cordoba if your time is precious.

Bus times between Cordoba and Granada are found on www.alsa.es

Also consider the cheaper regular train called Media Distancia MD on timetables as it is quite quick and costs less between Cordoba and Seville.

See times on http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html

As soon as you book your times make sure you book Alhambra tickets..

If you do not want to fly, there are direct AVEs (high speed trains) every day between Sevilla and Barcelona.

By my reckoning, the journey takes about as long as the total journey time if you fly. You still have to schlepp out to the airport, hang around in the departures lounge, collect your luggage at the other end, and take the bus into Seville centre.

The AVE takes you effortlessly from city centre to city centre. What is more, they give you a full refund if your train arrives more than 30 minutes late. As far as I know, no airline offers that kind of guarantee.

4 days for Sevilla, Cordoba AND Granada with a family of 4 - wow, that will be very fast paced. Is there any way to add a couple of days?

I am just back from spain and just did this. We flew from Barcelona to Granada. Then took the train to Seville, then stopped in Cordoba on our way to Madrid. This sequence was based on the train schedule and appeared to be the best order. We spent about one week (6 days) for the 3 places.
