Day Trip Malaga to Antequera

I'm going to Malaga for long weekend with my husband before Christmas again, to see the lights and take in the wonderful atmosphere that prevails at this time. We enjoy a day visiting the towns around Malaga. This year we considering Antequera. Is it a train or bus journey there? How long is the journey? Does the transport allow you to do the journey and sightseeing in one day? We are staying in the Ibis Malaga Centro hotel again so fairly easy to reach train or bus stations.

Thanks for any info, we can't wait to see Malaga again in all's its glory.

It's bus - the nearest railway station to Antequera is a few miles away.

This has been mentioned before - for an idea of the service see tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g187438-i333-k35… . For up-to-date info you probably need to go to Malaga bus station.

Please do not go by the departure times of buses in the link in #1, which I provided some time ago (or those provided by the article linked at #2).Yes, indeed you should check at the bus station. Many bus journeys have been cut all over the country and I will be surprised if the number in this case has not been reduced.

We had a nice day out in Antequera but they observe the siesta with great vigour. Plan on a long lunch! It really looked like a town after the bomb had fallen.

Thanks to everyone for your prompt reply's with the info. Manzana, although you said you had a nice day there, it some how has lost it's appeal. Is it really that quite?

You often find this with Spanish cities, even somewhere like Malaga can get fairly quiet during siesta but when we went to Antequera it really was a case of seeing nobody on the street between 2 and 4.30. The rest of the time though it was an interesting place to wander around. It was a while ago so you might be better off looking at the sidebars or the search panel to check what is open and when.

It also happens in the old town in Marbella! The number of times we've forgotten the time and walk up to Orange Square, grab a bite to eat and then start to walk around the streets and realise the majority of the shops are shut! Good excuse though to sit and have a quiet drink in the shade and eat some more wonderful food!

You can see bus times on www.alsa.es

The bus leaving at 0900 is probably ideal for you at a weekend.

Taking the train up from Malaga as already said means going to the newish station on the high speed line called Antequera Santa Ana some distance outside the town and from the station to Antequera itself will take some time. There are buses but overall it is not as good as using the bus from Malaga.

Santa Ana station bus times are :

There is plenty to see in Antequera even if the shops are closed all the attractions are open.

Not sure in winter but in summer small buses like a golf buggies do a hop on hop off service going round all the attractions. Is quite a long walk to walk round the city sites with uphill hikes.

We got on the bus at the bull ring, which is close to the bull ring.

The train station is 10km out of town so not really an option unless the speed of getting there is an issue.
