any recs re best time to visit Alhambra: morning v. afternoon v. evening - I have to get our tickets asap since we'll be there July 6-7 thanks!
In July I would go morning or evening - red hot in the afternoon.
Sunset is a spectacular time - watching the sun go down over the Sierra Nevada will take your breath away.
You must book a.s.a.p.!
Hotels are allocated about 400 tickets per day so the easiest way to reserve tickets would be through them. E-mail the Hotel. They will need your Passport number, the date desired and at what time you wish for entry into the Palacious Nazaríes. The extra charge is only 1 €. Tickets will be at the Will Call window.
The grounds are open from 08:30 to 18:00 and the Alhambra ticket office is open from 08:00 to 17:00. Entry into the complex is controlled by either Morning session tickets [08:30 – 14:00] or Afternoon session tickets [14:00 – 18:00].
If a visitor has a morning session ticket, they may enter the grounds after 08:30, stay until closing and visit the Nazaries Palace at the time specified. If a visitor has an afternoon ticket, they may not enter the grounds until after 14:00. All visitors with day session tickets must exit by 18:00.
You are only allowed entry into the Palacious Nazaríes during the 30-minute time window shown on the ticket. IMO reserve for 09:30 or 10:00. It is about a 15 minute walk from the entrance to the ticket control point for the Palace. Get and share an Audioguide with map [3 €]. You do not get a map with the ticket.
You cannot rely on hotel ticket allocations in high season.
Definitely go for morning or evening, try to stay away from the afternoon during the summer, as it can get hot. Between morning and evening, I would go with the morning.
We just returned from Granada. Our ticket for the Palace was at 11:30 a.m. We arrived at 8:30 (the line was huge), and fortunately our hotel had reserved our ticket, so we took our voucher to the very short (one to two people) and got our tix. We walked to the fortress first; then did the Palace, then the Generalife Gardens. I highly recommend the audio guides. As one of the previous posters mentioned, with a morning ticket you can stay until 2 pm - which gives you plenty of time.
Carlos V's palace and the area around it is free -- so we did this the night before. Our hotel staff recommend doing the free places in the evening before a morning visit...and they were right. Not many people were there, and you had a better sense of where you were going the next day.
You can catch the bus up to the Alhambra just outside the entrance to the Cathedral - only 1 euro. We walked down (twice) and found it to be an easy walk through shaded area.
