There are several bus operators in Spain and for each region you have the local ones. It is difficult for visitors to completely understand this network because, as far as I know, there is no national bus operators web site that is reliable. Attempts have been made to fix this with sites like http://www.movelia.es/ and http://www.avanzabus.com but none give full coverage of buses.

For example you ask about buses from Madrid to Seville. And the answer is not on those web sites but here:

http://www.socibus.es/index.jsp

In Andalucia itself you have several bus operators like:

http://www.ctsa-portillo.es

http://www.losamarillos.es

http://www.tgcomes.es/

http://www.autocarescasal.com

http://www.alsa.es

Thankyou for your reply. Unfortunately hen I go to the socibus site it is not in English. Is there an English site that would help me?

The Alsa website and movelia.es are in English but most of the others are only in Spanish.

However neither of those is particularly helpful when it comes to Seville - Madrid services.

Socibus has eight journeys a day to Madrid costing €19,85 but taking 6 hours. The fares for other operators won't be all that much different.

The train is much more expensive but takes only 2hrs 30 minutes.

Maybe time to get out the dictionary?

If you need specific translations I sometimes use http://translate.google.com/?hl=en#

You will find that when travelling in Spanish speaking countries it is very useful to master some basics in the language.

dianejoy,

Are you aware - with planning, abnormal train prices could be 60% reduced, i.e. possibly €33.30

Our problem is we cant book ahead as we are travelling around Spain for

3-4 weeks by ourselves by buses and dont have specific dates. ...and yes we will be endeavouring to master some of the basic spanish phrases but not enough to enable us to read a spanish bus website.

I expect that well within the 3 -4 weeks travelling around Spain by bus you will have mastered such as:

Comprar Billetes - Buy tickets

Origen - origin/starting point

Destino - destination

Ida - one way

Ida y Vuelta - round trip/return

Vuelta Abierta - open return ie no fixed date

Fecha Ida - choose outward date

Viajero(s) - passengers- some companies require names of passengers

Rutas - routes

Horario - timetable

DE LUNES A VIERNES LABORABLES - Mondays to Fridays except holidays.

SÁBADOS - Saturdays

DOMINGOS Y FESTIVOS - Sundays and Holidays

Excepto - except ie does not run on...

Estacíon Autobusses - bus station

I wish you well with your trip.
