How to get from Seville to Lisbon or vice versa
Save

Hi

I am trying to combine a trip which takes in Portugal as well as Seville (have visited other areas in Spain previously) as well as parts of Italy.

We no longer drive in Europe now 60/70's and it is too stressful to drive on the wrong side of the road.

I have been looking at flights with Tap but they seem so, so expensive. Are there any other airlines that fly this route.

Are there trains I cant seem to find any. Time to travel from Seville to anywhere in Portugal as the time to travel now we are older also has to be factored in to any holidays we plan

Any help here would be appreciated as Seville and Portugal seems so close but cant seem to link it all up.

Not a lot of info here in Australia and even guide books to Seville or Portugal dont really seem to give much information.

I am thinking of putting Seville in the too hard basket which I have done in years gone by, but as this may be our last trip to Europe I would really like to be able to visit this year.

Thanks

I don't know of any other airline flying that route.

There is no practicable route by train between the two cities unless you go via Madrid, which will take a total of about 14 hours. Portugal is almost cut off from the European railway network. There is only one train each day between Madrid and Lisbon, which travels overnight and takes about 10 hours.

There are motor coaches which take around 8 hours running via the south of Portugal. ALSA www.alsa.es has a daytime run on certain days of the week and an overnight run every night.

There is also a twice daily service with DAMAS from Seville to Faro in Portugal, from where you can travel the 3 or 4 hours to Lisbon by bus or train.

DAMAS bus information www.damas-sa.es only in Spanish (the link to English at the bottom of the page doesn't work for me)

Bus times Faro to Lisbon www.rede-expressos.pt (available partly in English) or www.renex.pt (only in Portuguese)

There are five trains each day from Faro to Lisbon times and fares at www.cp.pt available in English.

Reservation is recommended for buses / coaches and trains especially if travelling northbound on Sundays and around major holidays. Train reservations in Portugal open 30 days before travel, bus / coach reservations 15 days before travel.

The only other means I can think to do the trip is to go by train from Seville to Madrid and fly from Madrid to Lisbon. Easyjet has cheap flights.

I hope that helps.

We are headed there in mid April and the only time sensitive way to go from Lisbon to Seville was to book a flight. It Ended up being 100Euros from Lisbon to Madrid. And then we decided to take the AVE since we wanted to take a high speed train at one point.

The night train was really the only other option.

We were in similar situation two years ago when looking into option to travel from Seville to Lisbon. Cubsur sum it up very well on the various alternatives. We took ALSA night bus from Seville to Lisbon as we were reluctant to go up to Madrid, then to Lisbon (if you plan to take a train). The bus trip is safe, coach is clean and the bus driver is responsible driver. They stopped once or twice enroute before arriving in Lisbon early in the morning. I do hope you can manage with the luggages as it is not easy to manouver with heavy luggages in bus stations as bus stations around the world was not designed for passengers with big/heavy luggages.

Booking in ALSA website is kind of tricky. If you have Paypal, it will be easier as i had problem using Visa for the transaction.

Hi

So forgive jme if i am wrong but it is fly at about $600 au for 2 0r 8 hrs on a bus. that is not really viable for my husband as he would not be able to sit for that time.

Can someone please tell me the time for the Faro instead, is that less. Maybe we could stay overnight and continue on next day. Were going to spend ome time in Lagos, Porto and Lisbon in any order that flows easily and timewise. then we need to fly into Rome or Naples to continue our trip in Italy.

I can not believe how difficult Portugal is or organise to get to.

As I said we dont drive in Europe anymore, on the wrong side of the road as we find it too stressful.

Also I read on trip advisor that the trains in Portugal are having strikes all the time so this is not a reliable way to get around. Is this still the case.

Advice please re this

Hi Janderra

We are looking to travel from Seville to Lisbon. The cheapest flight I can find is with Vueling.com at AUD138 but there is a lay over at Barcelona. It takes 13 hrs 15mins to reach Lisbon. Wow!

Hi

I have found that if you check and check the days then you can fly from Lisbon to Seville with Tap for about 219.00 US for 2 on 1 day in the week. It is actually only a 1 hr flight. On other days it can be $565 or even $980 for the same flight, but dont give up, I have found there is a way if you change your dates to mid week and book early. I looked at 12/9 $900 approx, 14/9 $565 and then on the 16/9 $219 Us.

I was using skyscanner.com which is usually good to compare airlines, dates etc but when I actually went to book the fare it wasnt available and it then it was double the price

I then started to used kayak.com to compare pricest direct to the TAP website to get the best price.

If you scroll further and further through the flights the price gets more expensive but the time gets less, for us that is a bonus. Rather pay more than arrive so exhausted after 15 hrs that we are exhausted and sleep right through the first day. However I refuse to pay $900 plus for a 1 hr flight.

I have reorganised all our dates and the way we are doing the trip to get the best deal. I was told that Portugal is so cheap but trying to organise this, I am not finding it so, even though the economy in both Portugal and Spain is in trouble.

We are now going to fly from Rome to Porto with Ryan and spend some time, then Porto to Faro and spend some time in Lagos, moving on to Lisbon, then flying to Seville and then on to Naples. We were going to fly into Spain first and then into Seville and then to Lisbon but a lot of checking pays off.

I was told to fly to Seville via Valencia but they are in opposite ends of Spain and it didnt really work price wise either.

As I said for us Portugal is very expensive to get in and out of. There seems to be no train from Spain and only 12 hour bus which for us is not an option No wonder Portugal doesnt see too many Australians. Also finding the hotels, accomadation is so expensive, where I was told Portugal was so cheap. The hotels are all asking for about $180 - $300 a night without breakfast, whereas we travel in Greece, Italy, Sicily and Turkey every year and dont pay more than about 110 euro right in the centre, with a balcony, fridge, view etc.

Hope this helps you with your plans

It seems a little odd that you plan to go from Porto which is many kms north of Lisbon and go right to the south Algarve before heading back to Lisbon for going on to Seville.

Surely a logical route would take you Porto-Lisbon-Faro-Lagos then use the bus service between Algarve and Seville ? Did you read this ?

There is only one train between Madrid and Lisbon, the overnight Lusitano Tren Hotel. That can be booked on the Spanish Railways website www.renfe.com

The only other trains across the border are the twice daily trains between Vigo and Porto plus the Sud-Express from Irun, San Sebastian and Valladolid, which combines en route with the Lusitano train for the trip into Portugal.

The financial crisis has paid to any plans to improve rail services. In fact, many rail lines in Portugal are likely to close if the crisis deepens.

Other than the major air routes from Lisbon or Barcelona, it is indeed extraordinarily difficult to get from Spain to Portugal other by driving, which is of course what most people do.
