The beauty of Seville's Semana Santa

It is sometimes very hard to explain to travellers why they should know something like the Semana Santa's processions, due to the complexity of the celebration itself: art and spirit, colours and emotions, tragedy and joy, the five senses pleasures, and more...

Words are not enough.

Although this has been one of the most rainy Semanas Santas in our history, some magical moments have taken place.

Amongst them, this magical 'saeta' (Flamenco 'a cappella' song dedicated to a Christ or Mary figure) sung by Manuel Cuevas in Seville.

'What have you got, Macarena,

what have you got in your sight

that everyone who looks at you

suddenly starts to cry?'

I look forward to someday being in Cádiz for Semana Santa, for now I can only watch from afar. Thank you Ati for making the footage available.

Stayed in Seville for five days of Holy Week.

I knew about the religious celebrations but did not realise that they almost brought the city to a standstill.

The religious processions were self-regarding, dour and joyless as well as being nakedly triumphalist.

There is nothing harmless about re-enacting the intolerance of the Spanish Inquisition.

Lovely city but the religious element was distasteful.
