semana santa

I am thrilled to be going to semana santa in Spain. I will spend most of it in Malaga ending with Easter Sunday in Seville. Question, I keep reading about Easter Monday, is that also part of the holiday? I assume it means the Monday following Easter. Will some of the festivities take place on this day also? Thanks

Holy Week 2007 is from Palm Sunday which is April 1st until 8th or "Domingo de Resurrección" - perhaps the busiest times for the processions are the first Sunday and the night before Good Friday.

The full schedule is published nearer the week. The local paper will contain maps of the route of the various processions. One web site that is very useful is www.guiasemanasanta.com - gives details of the routes and 'pasos' for each day, sponsored by Caja San Fernando bank.

The last Sunday is devoted to the Resurrection and one paso is made called naturally enough La Resurección.

Easter Monday in UK is another name for Bank Holiday Monday which is a public holiday in UK on the first Monday after Holy Week. So this year it is April 9th. I don't think it is a public holiday in Spain. Effectively Semana Santa ends on 8th.

There is only one paso, or procession, on Sunday in Seville. It leaves at 4:30am and finished around noon. Otherwise the day is more of a recovery time for those who have passed the week following the processions.

We were in Sevilla last year for Semana Santa - fantastic! We had the pleasure of being escorted by some of our Spanish family born and raised in Sevilla, so have some great authentic interpretation. I recall all the processions were leading up to easter, but none after. The processions are beautiful and of course every family has their favorite, based on what organizations and parishes the family members belong to. We watched one in Maria Luisa park that was beautiful and had the most stirring music....i still watch the little video clips I was able to take with the digital camera. Much of the audience was visibly moved, which made it even more special. Have a great time!
