Picos; where to stay , how to get around

If I don't want to rent a car to get to the various areas for trekking, are there tours or buses that drop off/pick up at convenient places?

I'm arriving at Asturias airport, is it better in terms of getting to the Picos to be based at Oviedo or Gijon...or somewhere else entirely?

I can't help you with public transport in the area, but if you take a look at this hotel in Arenas de Cabrales, they have all sorts of walks, climbs & mountain bike tours - http://fade.es/torretours/home.htm

We stayed there for a couple of nights in August 2005 & Jim & Pilar are fantastic. The hotel is basic but comfortable & the area is beautiful. You can sit in the garden after a long day & look at the peaks & watch eagles soaring overhead........magical!

thank you, it looks great! Did you get to Cabrales by car?

Does anyone know how to reach Cabrales from Oviedo or Gijon by bus?

Yes, we drove from the UK in our own car. If you do decide to stay there, email Jim & Pilar for details of transport. They are very helpful.

I've just had a look for you & found the tourist info site - infoasturias.com/action/InfoasturiasEntrada…

If you go into the site map & scroll right down to "Travelling to" it brings up "By Bus" & gives you

Sorry, posted before I'd finished!

I was going to say ...... it gives you all the operators, but it doesn't give you schedules. You could always email them & ask for the info you want.

Here is a page from a web site that lists some companies that organise walking trips in Asturias.

http://www.asturnor.com/turismoactivo.html

The folowing hotel does guided walks or has routes for you to follow. There are also directions on how to get to the hotel using public transport. It does not seem so easy.

posadadelvalle.com/english/fhoteldescrip.html

Here is another good web site which lists accommodation and some walking choices too.

http://www.linearural.com/

Using a bus will severally limit your choice of places to stay.
