travelling from Pau to Santander- how and where to stay?

Hi We are travelling from Pau to Santander (on public transport most likely but car hire once we cross into Spain might be an option). We have a day and night to do it- this is planned for mid August- any suggestions welcome on how best to make the trip with 2 little ones and also a nice place to overnight? Thanks

Hello DublinStr,

I suggest you once you cross spain, if you go by car use the motorway to get to Santander. A great place to stay might be San sebastian.

A city located in the north coast of spain an 10 km far from the France border. It's in the middle of the way from Pau to Santander so, it can be a great place to overnight.

To find a good place to stay, you can look on tripadvisor vacation rentals.

Yeah, I would agree, stay in San Sebastian for the night, it's about 2ish hours from Pau driving, depending a bit on border traffic, and it's 2 hours from SS to Santander. The A8 motorway is fairly quick, but you can expect traffic around Bilbao, and there is a toll section between SS and Bilbao. On the French side there are further tolls. If you're looking for public transport between Pau and SS, then you're probably looking at a combination of PESA buses, www.pesa.net, with whom you can get buses from Biarritz or Bayonne to San Sebastian, SNCF French railways, www.sncf.com, for trains to Biarritz of Bayonne. Other options could include the Euskotren, www.euskotren.es, which runs trains from Hendaye, last stop on the French side, to SS, and ALSA, www.alsa.es, which runs buses from SS (and Santander) to Irun, the first stop over the Spanish border.

Depending on how you do it, you might want to change where you stay, St Jean de Luz on the French side is lovely, and Hendaye is not so bad either, definately better than Irun. SS would be the best option though, with lovely beaches, tapas and among other things an aquarium for the kids.

Careful about crossing the French border around the 15th August, or in fact driving around the French side on that date, it's the end of many French holidays, so there can be major traffic problems, though mostly in the French direction, so you may be going against the flow.

Many thanks for this- is it necessary to book train/bus tickets in advance for around this time? I've looked and SS seems completely booked out for accomodation- any local advice for places to try?? Much appreciated in advance
