itinerary help

We will be in southern france and would like to visit san sebastian.

We will be arriving from Bayonne but need to return to Paris via Avignon. Can anyone suggest a driving route from San Sebastian to Avignon. We have several days to get there. We will be in the San Sebastain area for 5 days. Is it worth an overnight stay in Bilbao?

Thanks

Hi terlie!

You can go leave San Sebastian and take de motorway A8. Then, when you get France take A64 (286km). Finally you have to take the A9 motorway and look the right exit to get Avignon.

Hoper to be helpful.

Bilbao you can do quite easily as a day trip from San Sebastian if you don't want to stay, it's only an hours drive. If you did want to stay the night, there are plenty of hotels, but be careful how much you pay for parking at a hotel, they can charge a lot (the norm is about 20 Euros overnight in a hotel car park). The old town is very nice for a walk around and has lots of places to eat at night. You should definately visit the Guggenheim if nothing else.

When we drove that way a few years ago we drove as far as Toulousse on the motorway and then headed off to visit the incredible bridge at Millau, via Albi. On the way back we went via beautiful Carcassone. Nîmes I guess you'll do as a day trip from Avignon, and Uzes is just beautiful. There are many beautiful places around Pau too, from where you can easily head up into the Pyrenees. Otherwise, you could focus on stopping along the south coast, or alternatively take your time driving through the foothills of the Pyrenees.
