Share your experience the coastal road San Sebastian Bilbao

We are traveling by car in Mid-October from San Sebastian to Bilbao, and were wondering if the coastal road is okay. Are there good roads? Would appreciate any useful comment

Climate at that time of year?

Roads in the Basque Country are excellent. There are two options: the really beautiful and scenic coastal road (Zarautz, Getaria, Zumaia, Deba, Lekeitio, Ea, Elantxobe...) but with verywinding roads and fun to drive (if you like driving!). When arriving in Ondarroa follow Markina (inland) to get to Lekeitio, the coastal road is VERY curvy and not kept in the best condition. The other alternative is the motorway, toll road, that runs mainly inland. Temperatures in October are usually mild, and you should expect some rain.

I drive the motorway route a lot and it is also good fun and quite scenic. Depends how much time you have to spare. Video of the route (from Biarritz) is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjT9hJPAZT8

Apart from the towns mentioned by Mikel, you also shouldn't miss the Urdaibai Nature Reserve and, of course, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: euskoguide.com/places-basque-country/…

Thank you all for your information, still undecided if we go by the coast or the other road, but thanks for your advice.

Yes, the coast road is stunning, but quite vertiginous in places, definitely NOT recommendable at night or in the rain, very curvy and not in great condition...I'd still take it though, beautiful views and lovely villages along there. The section of motorway between these Bilbao and SS is, in my opinion, not the best or most comfortable to drive either, very curvy, and not great in the wet (just my opinion, but the speed limit is too high on parts, it is a challenge to safely do 120 in some sections). It is a pretty motorway drive though, that's for sure, winding between hills and with good views. Whichever you take, just take it a little easy and enjoy the views! (and if you've just come from France, be prepared to go from straight to curvy!)
