Perhaps if you tell us what you like to do/see on holiday, also what standards of accommodation you are looking for,we can try to help you. There is a wealth of information on here but we are not mind-readers.

Which airport do you fly to in mainland Spain? Geographically it is a massive country and you will only be able to scratch the surface in a week before going on to Majorca.Internal flights are usually cheaper and more time-efficient than ferries.

Last time I responded to a "blank canvas" enquiry on this forum from a US citizen by suggesting some prior research at home I got my bum bitten so I am a bit cagey getting involved again with Americans. But we are all keen to encourage the growth in American tourism of Majorca so are willing to help.

You're probably right buddy.Slap bang in the middle of Spain and a city I have not been to.(Might just be Barcelona or Malaga in which case I can be more helpful re the mainland bit).

Dear WirralScouse and buddystar,

We have spent a week in Bacelona 4 years ago and our daughter studied in Sevilla. We visited her the week of the Iceland volcano. Spent a night sleeping in the beautiful Malaga airport before taking the train to Sevilla.

We love everything about Spain, it's celebration of its rich and artistic history and its embrace of the best of modern architecture and transportation, and initially thought of driving around for 2 weeks, hitting major cities and landmarks. However, Majorca is calling us.

We are looking for a vacation and a hotel that mirrors Spain. History with modern ammenities. Comfort, culture, and the best deal for the money. (4 kids in U.S. colleges). We are open and interested in your input. Thanks again and peace.

You might want to consider private accommodation. A bnb or apartment off the beaten track. Can be a lot more enchanting than a resort, often cheaper too.

A quick google of bnb old world modern ammenities mallorca brought me to this one, which seems like something that may tick your boxes:

http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/412386

also check http://ownersdirect.co.uk or http://9flats.com or http://homeaway.com

Just enter "majorca" as a search term.

Good luck!

Thank you mmy for a succinct specification.I get the picture. There are lots more people who know lots more about Spain (mainland and Balearics) than I do but I have been taking holidays in Spain for 30 years nearly every year and frequently twice or 3 times a year in Majorca.

So this is my take based on my own experiences (Madrid excluded because I have not been).Mainland first.First city,under-rated historic Girona, North of Barcelona, more like the real Spain and essentially unspoiled by modernism.Conveniently located for the more traditionally attractive and more "Spanish" coastal resorts of the Costa Brava and adjacent, including Llafranc,Pals,Palamos (Picasso connections nearby),San Feliu. There is a marvellous small boat ferry system that serves all the main resorts along that coast.

If you hire a car best not to base in Girona as it is not car-friendly.Stay outside and use public transport to get into and out of Girona for sight-seeing.

At the end of your mainland week travel to Barcelona. From there fly or take the overnight sea ferry (for something different) to Majorca either to Palma or Alcudia. Not the same ferry.

Where to base in Majorca? Lots of regulars on this forum will advise you.My first tip would be Hotel Miramar in Puerto Pollensa (very close to port of alcudia) a traditional, convenient bay-front located 3* hotel with recently added facilities. But I fear they will be fully booked for July. You could try though.I have previously recommended it to first-time American visitors to Majorca which prompted favourable feedback including from a Professor of Psychology at Princeton University.

I think if not Pto Pollensa then Soller would be best.I am not a specialist on Soller so will leave it to the many we are blessed with on TA Majorca Forum to recommend a suitable traditionally Mallorquin hotel in Soller that may still have space in July.

Good luck.
