buying baby food/nappies in menorca

we are going on holiday to cala n blanes staying at vista blanes apartments. We have a baby and I need to know where I can buy baby food and nappies. Does anyone know if the resort supermarket sells these?

Hi. I've not been to that resort. But, having travelled with babies a few times, I'd say try to take as much as possible with you, as buying anything baby-related (especially if you want English brands) is very expensive.

Hi Liz

How old is your little one? If he/she is still having forumla milk then I would strongly recommend you take your full supply. Spanish formula is different to our own even if it has the same brand. The worst case is that it could lead to severe stomach upset which can lead to other things such as dehydration. I know some people have used Spanish formula and their baby has been fine. I also know others who have had problems. Is it worth the risk?

If you are struggling with packing everything within the weight allowance then check with your carrier to see if the little one has an allowance. We are going with First Choice and our son has been given a 10kg allowance free of charge.

If all else fails then there are companies who specialise in shipping baby items abroad. First Choice recommend one in their brochure. If you can't find then send me a PM and I will give you the name. (We have used them this time as well as in the past). It isn't cheap compared to UK prices but at least you know everything will be there waiting for you and all will be your usual brands. You will also have the advantage of knowing how much it all cost upfront instead of worrying about the prices on the island.

Packing for little ones is a nightmare so I can sympathise.

Monarch will also give 10kg for an infant as standard. Thomas Cook will also, but you must phone them and pre-book.

Didn't know that Wayne. Useful for future trips.

I find it annoying that they don't really advertise this fact. We paid for extra luggage allowance initially but cancelled it as soon as we found out.

Monarch have made it a bit clearer lately. When you book an infant, it tells you about the 10kg. Thomas Cook are a lot quieter about it. It's hidden on their help pages.

Thomas Cook also told me that I can take a travel cot for free too, as well a buggy and car seat, as they are 'baby essentials'. Monarch will allow 2 of the 3 to go free. My travel cot must weigh 20kg on its own. I phoned both call centres to confirm this. I was going to hire a cot in Menorca in June, so this will save me €33.

Thankyou all for your replies, Luckilly shes not on formula any more but I don't know how easy it is to buy fresh cows milk. I have bought a load of Ella's kitchen stuff to take with us as it is packaged better than jars. I'll probably try and pack nappies, We are going with Thomson and they have given a 10kg allowance for her so hopefully we'll manage. All been useful advice and I will try and take as much with me as possible. On the bright side we'll have more room on the way home!

Hi, you won't have a problem finding cows milk. It's sold in cartons full cream or semi skimmed pasturised just the same as at home. I've given it to both my children without any problems at all.

Wish I'd known about the extra 10kg when mine were younger, when I think how I struggled to stay within the allowance! Could have taken extra shoes instead!!!

Hi Liz,

Stayed at the Vista Blanes last week, and the on site supermarket is not so great, however if you go out of the front of the apartments, turn left and follow the road past the bus stop til you get to the bit of road opposite Churchill's pub, then turn left again and follow the road, there's a supermarket about halfway down. Much cheaper and more stocked than the resort supermarket.

While here, I'll recommend you to go for the menu of the day at the restaurant right next to the supermarket, Es Pintus. They do the nicest chocolate mousse I have ever tasted. Also, down in Delfins, try the bar Tropical Kiss. The guy is the friendliest guy we met and the drinks are cheap and he will do waiter service to your table. Best bar by far and the seats are sooo comfy!!

Have a great time!!!
