santo tomas beach update

Just returned from 1 week at the Sol Menorca hotel, between the hotel Santo Thomas and the Vistar appartments. The beach is still there. honestly. Just not as most old customers may remember it. If you are going to the Vistamar then prepare for disappointment. The sand has all been washed away leaving mostly large stones. with tiny bits of sand at the waters edge, but nowhere to put a towel. To the left of the Santo Tomas hotel where the beach started right outside to left, facing the sea the sand has been washed away to a depth of approximately 6 or 7 feet exposing rocks you would never have know were there for approximately 80 metres. However the beauty is that it has left this area scattered with rock pools and areas that are protected from waves on windy days, populated by tiny fish and providing a safe haven for children and adults alike. The rest of the beach is much as before but does not extend for such a large distance before meeting the sea. For further information the sea is very shallow when you first go into it, but do not be dismayed when you get out of your depth. Depending on weather (waves)if you swim another 10 metres the sea floor comes up again and is only just over 1.3 metre deep with warm currents every so often. Some of the beach may not be visable but is there, just under the surface. When mother nature calls it will emerge again, as it has on many occasions before. Unfortunately anyone expecting sand from in front of the Vistamar to the Es Grau bar will be disappoined, but a good beach is only a few mins away. PS. Recommendation for anyone going self catering/ Take any light essentials in your luggage as everything is VERY VERY expensive - unless you want to pay 6 - 7 euros for a filled baguette and approx 9.50 euros for a pint of largar and brandy and lemonade in the hotels. Cheap it is not. If you have to do a big shop then do at the hypermarket at Cuidedella. It is cheaper by far than any other supermarket except the spar under the old convent in Mahon (next to the fish market at the top of the eplanade) NB written by Debs not Paul. Hope John the dog approves of content. NNB would wholeheartedly recommend the coffee bar in the complex next to the Santo Tomas hotel. We had lunch there several times and their prices are much lower than any of the bars on the front, but with much beter quality and variety. Service is also excellant and portions are extermely generous

Thanks for the update Debs (not paul). So you'll agree that there is plenty of sand on the main Santo T beach and for those staying in the Vistimar their holiday is not ruined - just different.

Did you find the sandy beach busier than usual, with the folks that usually use Biniguas and sant adeodat coming along to use it? (Perhaps it's still to early in the season to tell). Cant help but feel soooo disappointed. This is our eighth trip to Santo Tomas, but the first at the Vistamar and on that particular beach, typical!! We're not prepared to pay for beach beds and umbrellas each day - too costly, (usually take our own loungers, and thought it would be so handy just to nip out of the gate onto the beach) I assume that the pool at the Vistamar will become busier too. What with the cost of food and drink I can see I'm going to have to pack my apron too.

We haven't stayed in Menorca before & are due to stay at Vistamar end July for a week.

One of the main reasons for choosing the apartments was the location next to the beach- We have a 2 year old who loves sea/beach & pool so thought we would be able to 'nip' between the beach & pool depending on what he wanted to do. How far away are the other beaches & will the beaches there are become 'overcrowded'- another thing we wanted to avoid.

Anyone recommend any other resorts?- Those who have been to Santa Tomas before- would you go so far as to change your holiday??

Hi again Twirral, you say:

>One of the main reasons for choosing the apartments was the location next to the beach< It still is so no worries there.

>How far away are the other beaches< less than 2 mins idle stroll.

>Will the beaches there are become 'overcrowded'< No, not in July, it'll take till mid August for that to happen

>would you go so far as to change your holiday??< After all the debate here on the state of the beach there's only one poster that's considering it, and regulars here are still trying to tell them it's best to stay put.

Best advice is that if you've never been to Santo T before you'll think it's perfect. If you have and know the place well there might be a very slight inconvienience but no more than that. Hve a good holiday.

Hi Twirral

We had never been to Santo Tomas before we went a few weeks ago. We had a fantastic time. Like JtD and others have said, if you haven't been before you don't know any different.

Just so you know how good a time we had, we are going back next year. We are also looking to have a week later this year. Just negotiating with work when I can have time off!!!!!

It's a great place.

One piece of advice is to follow the tips from the likes for JtD and MenorcaRegular. They know what they are talking about. We did and knew where to shop, other places on the island to visit etc. Made it so much easier to slip into holiday mode.

You will have a great time.
