Fornells Festival

We are staying in Addaia in July with our 2 boys age 9 & 6 and would like to visit the Fiesta de San Antonio in Fornells. What kind of events can we expect and is there a particular day/time we shouldn't miss? Many thanks

You really need someone like our DE jon-the-dog or his father dogdad who are always based in Fornells village to answer this but while you re waiting please see tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g666974-i11652-k… and http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/SearchForums?ff=494&geo=187464&scope=2&q=fornells+fiesta&pid=34633&s=+

What I do know about this fiesta is that they have a whale of a time and lots of horses etc. are included ( see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z9f-a1onxw ) The village effectively shuts down when it is on - if you do not get there early enough you cannot get in by car easily etc.

I'm sure the experts will be along soon but in general the local council publish on their websites the agenda nearer the time. Most summer fiestas are similar - Religious components, Live Music, Various Horse Parades, Fireworks last night -its the timings you need to watch out for :-)

Sorry for the delay, just back from the island after 10 days, but here's a quick rundown of the Fornells Fiesta:

Various low key events in the main square in the week running up to the main weekend, folk bands, acrobats etc, usually something every night.

The Fiesta starts proper on the Friday night with 2 or 3 bands playing in Placa des Forn from 11pm

Saturday sees the start of the Jaleo (horse riders and general mayhem) this all starts at around 4pm and the youth of the island will then get progressively drunker until they get totally legless by around 8. The live entertainment (2 DJ's last year) starts around midnight and goes on until around 4 am.

We have nicknamed this day "mad Saturday" and IMO it is to be avoided at all costs, especially with kids. This year we plan to have a meal out in Mercadal to escape the aggro.

Far better to come into the village the following day - There's another Jaleo on the Sunday Morning around 11ish so if you want to see the horses this is the best time. The Cuitadella brass band usually plays and it's still very lively. Here's what you can expect:

Monday night is always fireworks night, at around 10pm when it's good and dark! then usually another 3 bands on stage from 11pm to round the whole thing off.

Full timings usually found in the July issue of Roquetta if you can grab a copy

Just for clarity, Fiesta del Carmen, celebrated in Mahon, Cuitadella and Fornells will be around 16/17th July.

Fornells fiesta de Sant Antoni is the last weekend in July

Just a tip for Horses. The parades tend to 'start about at time' you will hear the 'flute' BUT the horse before/after the 'dancing' will be in the side streets where your kids can get up close in safe way :-)

Cboughtwood, I am not sure how often JTD is visiting the forums at the minute. I will send him a PM (the private messaging facility here on Ta is useful if you want to ask a specific person something) and ask him to see if he can help you.

From what I understand Fornells Village pretty much closes down to incoming traffic when the fiesta is in full swing ( I haven't been there then myself) so if you are based in Playa de Fornells you would have to get into the village early. Here are some links to YouTube footage to give you an idea of how busy the streets are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN-0CDOQPEE, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN-0CDOQPEE , . This last one gives lots of footage of the horses gathering and moving down to the main part of the jaleo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKlaHuRycyE
