Car hire without a full tank of petrol/diesel

We are travelling to Gran Canaria next month and don't want to be caught out again with a car that is fully loaded with petrol/diesel. On an island as small as GC its difficult to use all the fuel in the week we're there (the kids quite happy not to do any sight seeing!)so wondered if anyone out there has rented a car recently without the preload

Many thanks Paul

Don't you just use what you use and top it up before you go?

Wish we could, we were quoted by Goldcar 128$ as an all in price for the week last April. On arrival we were charged a further 59$ for fuel, additional surcharge of 35$ for lost keys (not covered on the usual cdw etc) & tax at 13% totalling a staggering 222$!! for a 1.6 Focus. The problem is with a lot of these rental companies is that they insist on a full tank of fuel to set you on your way, if you return the vehicle with say 1/2 tank of fuel there is no refund only if you are on a 4 day stay will they reimburse you. A couple of years ago travelling to varied canary islands rental comp's used to give you enough to get to the nearest fuel stop & you then only pay for what you use.

How bizarre.

Every rental company I have ever used gives you a car wtih a full tank. You drive as much as you want and just make sure you return it with a full tank (therefor you have paid for what you used).

Have you tried National? I've never had a problem with them before.
