HELP recommendations please

Have not visited Gran Canaria before but looks completley different to Tenerife and Lanzarote. After reading forums think all inclusive would be best? Priorities are location and accessibility to beach especially for mornings where we have not gone out further afield and for evening and walking off dinner. Somewhere with a promenade. In our fifties so lively but not too lively amid all the youngsters as enjoy the quieter aspects. Like to get out and about to explore rather than sit on beach or poolside all day so any Recomendations welcome as we have varied interests. I also spotted a post regarding snorkelling and a reef so more information on this would be appreciated. I have looked at quite a few websites regarding accommodation and again would welcome suggestions.

Many thanks and happy holidays

Also forgot to mention we are thinking of coming in March and might consider hiring car from airport but not sure about road system. Tenerife busier than Lanzarote road wise and both completely different to navigate...reminisce Masca and fright first time but became a firm favourite to the more sedate driving of Lanzarote. comparisons please.

I would say Meloneras/Maspalomas area or Puerto Mogan would be perfect for you. The first area having a higher choice of AI hotels than Mogan (make sure if you look at Mogan that you are looking at hotels in the resort of Mogan as some are listed as Mogan but are further afield).

Road system really easy - 1 motorway GC1 straight from the airport down to the southern resorts.

There are a number of dive schools in the south if you want to go on escorted snorkling or if you just want to potter in the shallows look at the beaches in Anfi or Amadores which have imported coral sand so the water is nice and clear.

To my knowledge, there are no AI hotels in Puerto Mogan ;o)

Have been to Riu Club hotel Meloneres (AI) and would recommend.

Thanks Ruthie

You have confirmed what I have thought so far and those are the areas I felt most likely to be suitable although as you say some accommodation is not where you think it might be. I did have difficulty finding somewhere nearer the beach in meloneras/maspalomas as most places seemed to say 2 0r 3 km to the dunes. I found this a little confusing as felt if there was another beach near by they would also have mentioned it by name and was not sure if calling it the dunes was also a collective name for several smaller beaches along that area.

Thanks for suggesting escorted snorkelling as had not thought of that as relatively new to it but according to friends we met on holiday last year I am a complete natural at this. A whole new world under there! Not as hard as I thought or claustrophobic and breathing very automatic for want of a different description. Wish I had tried it years ago...so much I have missed out on.

thanks for your suggestions

Thanks for your reply Fussy

Initially I looked at both AI and SC as was not fbothered too much which we went for but then noted several posts mentioning high costs of eating out etc. I will need to check but seem to recall one hotel in Morgan Cor...something or other that did all inclusive that seemed very reasonable but not much sun on balconies and seemed to be in quieter part of area from reviews. this may confirm what Ruthie was saying about some places not being where you would expect them to be in Morgan.

thank you for your help

Sorry Fussy I stand corrected! I'd thought the Cordial was offering AI but assume maximum is full board?

Mogan is tiny Scotia37 compared to Maspalomas. If you look at the Cordial it's only 10 mins or so walk to the beach and is lovely if you consider not doing AI. I've done a couple of visits there although not stayed there.

Thank you Ruthie

It was the Cordial That I looked at and it may have been full board I have looked at so many this week and have got totally confused as its all beginning to merge. 10 mins is fine a nice little stroll and the only negative I read was lack of sun on balconies. But don't intend to spend much time there anyway.

Many thanks to both of you for your replies

ha ha Ruth you do not need to stand corrected after all the invaluable support you give to the forum! The hotel offers something which I think they call full board plus. This covers breakfast, lunch, evening meal and drinks with meals BUT drinks with meals ONLY and not for the rest of the day.

Scotia, we have stayed at Cordial Valle apartments in Mogan and also the Cordial Playa hotel. You may prefer it there as it is nearer to Amadores and Anfi for the snorkeling. There is a a good bus service from there to the rest of the island. Boats also sail from Puerto Mogan to Puerto Rico and Anfi.

Many thanks to you both for all your help and advice...I have a much clearer idea of each area now :).

drinks with eve meal would be fine fussy as quite happy with bottled water during day and can buy a bottle of vino etc to keep in fridge for emergencies! :)

Looking forward to some clear blue skies as its very grey here again today.

Thanks again
