A little general info ...

Hi everyone

We're a couple in our early 50's just booked to stay in the Las Olas Hotel in Los Cancajos arriving 26th Dec for 2 weeks and would like a little general info please .

I know we aren't going to find an overly bustling tourist destination like Lanzarote ,Tenerife or Fuerteventura where I've spent winter holidays in the past .

{ This is the main reason for me booking La Palma ! No karaoke , Happy hour?, full English or John Smiths bitter }

So here are my questions....

A , We do enjoy a bit walking so we will be taking our boots , lightweight waterproof jackets with fleece liners etc

But will we need anything more substantial for either at altitude or on an evening and will it be warm enough for shorts and t-shirts through the day?

B , How little Spanish can I get away with in restaurants ?

I can do a bit { Managed to do 2 weeks off the beaten tourist track in Mora d'Ebre , inland Spain OK but found written Spanish a bit of a challenge at times }

C , Is Christmas time busy enough for some live music outside of the hotels , in the bars or restaurants either in Los Cancajos or Santa Cruz or if there is a bar anywhere that specialises ?

We love live music and acoustic or classical guitar especially .

Thanks for any replies in advance .

Glenn.

Hi Glen,

Great to hear that you'll be in La Palma for a couple of weeks - plenty of walking for you!

Sounds like you've done some research which is always good and yes, at altitude it is normally much colder than at sea level in winter - it could even be minus figures and with snow. But that is at the very top at 2426m.

I would just expect a mix of weathers though so you should certainly need your shorts and T-shirts but make sure you have a fleece too.

As for speaking Spanish, most restaurants have the menu in English so it shouldn't be a problem.

One of the bars, La Lomada, in Los Cancajos often has live guitar music and there are other venues and street musicians too, especially in the run up to Christmas.

La Lomada is down by the sea, where you walk down to the beach. It's right opposite the tourist office so you would have no problem in finding it. It could be a good idea to ask at the hotel reception what places they know of with live music and also ask in the tourist office both in Los Cancajos and in Santa Cruz. They don't tend to publicize these things very much!

Hi Glenn (lekistyx) - this is a bit random but I saw your post from a year ago about taking an acoustic guitar to Lesvos and I was wondering if you could tell me if you had any luck hiring/borrowing one on the island? I am getting married there in a month and our instrument hire company has let us down massively - we now have a band but no acoustic guitar and I really don't want to have to bring one from the UK and face possible damage. If you have any guidance, or could put us in touch with any of your local band members who might be up for hiring one out that would be massively appreciated.

Thanks!
