No Brakes on Goldcar car hired at Tenerife South Airport

NO BRAKES ON TOP OF MOUNTAIN and NO BREAKDOWN SERVICE!

Hired a small automatic car from Goldcar at Tenerife Airport. On the first day of use and having reached quite a high altitude the brake wear warning light came as as did the check the brake fluid warning. Not wanting to chance driving back down steep windy roads we called the SOS service and got an ANSWER MACHINE! After leaving 3 messages and no call backs we abandoned the car at midnight and took cab back to hotel. Next day, Goldcar denied we had called their SOS service but eventually they found my recorded messages and didnt seem to care one bit that nobody bothers to answer the 24 hr SOS roadside recovery phone - one staff member even suggested that if you dont take out the extra insurance then they wont provide any emergency assistance. Eventually got a replacement car wasting about a day of our holiday on this.

We have been surprised by the state of a lot of the hire cars in Tenerife.Bald tyres etc. etc. I would have thought they would have higher safety standards but apparently not.

Must say, Goldcars is not a hire company I recognise. If you see previous posts on the subject of car hire, Autoreisen, Cicars and Orcars take a lot of beating.

What a nightmare! We had problems with this company earlier this month because of their hidden charges. We always use Holiday Autos for our car hire, as we like to know that all insurance is included and pay extra for full cover. On this occasion they used Goldcar, and on arrival at Tenerife South Airport we were advised of everything that was not included in our "all inclusive" insurance. We were told that for the bargain price of 5.5 euros a day we could have complete peace of mind. We were also charged 53 euros for a full tank of petrol, which should not have cost any more than 39. The company's policy is that you return the car empty - not easy. As if this wasn't enough both credit card transactions were converted to sterling without our permission at a very poor rate plus a "2% exchange rate markup"! We feel strongly that this is unacceptable opportunism and have told Holiday Autos that we do not wish to use this company again.

We always use Rent A Car Santiago. It is a British owned Company who do Airport drop offs and pick ups. The are situated near Los Gigantes and maintain their cars regardless of cost. They only have about 50 cars but a staff of 6 and an all inclusive insurance policy, based on the American system. They have no excess or deposit and no hidden extras, you only pay for the fuel you use. The have a 24 hour emergency mobile number, without answer phone, as someone always answers. We cannnot fault them. You pay one price and have peace of mind motoring for your entire holiday. They have a website www.rentacarsantiago.com with a contact number on there.
