Where to stay

We are thinking of going to the island late March/early April. Cannot decide the area to stay in so we can decide on a hotel/B&B. Looks like there are all different areas of the island. Probably not interested in an all inclusive. Would like nice views. Centrally loctaed so we can travel around (by car). Would like to be able to walk around at night to restaurants/bars, etc. "A bit Funky"or off beat are okay. Clean an absolute must with private bathroom. MUST be no smoking. Pool would probably be a plus (but not absolutely necessary). Area or hotel does not need to be primarily English speaking. Hope that is specific enough. Anxious to hear from you all as this is a new place for us.

1. Re: Where to stay

In general the island offers accommodation in the north which is more traditional or in the south which is nearest to the airport for transfers.

Having only stayed in the south of the island I can only comment on this. Los Cristianos adjoins Playa Del Las Americas which in turn adjoins Costa Adeje. You can walk all the way along the beach front from one to the other.

Each poster on here will offer a different opinion but we always choose to stay in the Costa Adeje area which is very central for us. We never look for AI as there is so much choice regarding meals out which are not expensive.

You don't give a budget or a star rating for the hotel so it's difficult to offer suggestions.

Thanks Daisy from New York City. We usually look for at least a 3 star. We like to eat in nice restaurants where the locals go --- nothing too touristy or too high end. As I said, Spanish is not a problem.

Thanks again.

Hi, we prefer Puerto de la Cruz on the norther coast. Puerto is a local town, as well as the original holiday resort. The old town dates back to the 1600s, centred around the fishing harbour and traditional Plaza Charco, with hundreds of local bars and restaurants in the old streets. A short walk away is a modern sea front, with good quality hotels overlooking an award winning sea-water lido complex, with free-form pools in the shape of the Canary Islands.

From Puerto you can reach all parts of the island by local bus. Including Oratava famous for its historic wooden balconies, Icod for its 2,000 year old tree, the capital Santa Cruz, and the historic ancient city and one time capital La Laguna, where it's streets have changed little in 400 years.

If you're looking for 3 star and above you will have lots of choice in any of the areas. It's really down to doing some homework and reading the reviews of the hotels and finally deciding on which area to stay in. Don't forget that the island is easy enough to travel around by car.

I can recommend the Dream Hotel Gran Tacande and the Jardin de Nivaria which are both 5 star. They are both seafront and in the Costa Adeje area.

I guess lots of other regular posters will suggest some good hotels in other areas for you. Enjoy.

FORHILL:

I would stay at Puerto de Santa Cruz. You do not need to rent a car because hotels have tours to all parts of the island. Puerto de Santa Cruz has the fabulous Loro Parque, a great animal theme park.

Hi, Benny is referring to Puerto de la Cruz, home to Loro Parque, 40 minutes away by bus from Santa Cruz the Capital.

Hi

If you want all the touristy attractions , eg Whale Watching , Water Parks , Water Sports etc ,then you need to look at resorts in the south of the island .

If you prefer a more Canarian /cosmopolitan holiday with plenty of good restaurants and pavement bars ,then Puerto de la Cruz is your best bet .

Puerto is also best located to visit , places of historical interest .

It can be fairly busy ,but it is a very relaxed and friendly place .I am not saying the southern resorts are not friendly ,but my preference is the north of the island .

Where every you choose I would go S/C because eating out in Tenerife is so cheap. Unless it is a special meal we never pay more than 10e for a 3 course menu of the day. I would pick Puerto de la Cruz because you have the Botanical gardens, Orchid gardens, water garden up by the old casino, Lido, Loro Park, 40-50 min walk to Bollullo beach, the harbour, the old town and loads of churches. You have more than enough Canarian restaurants and tapas bars for a 2 week holiday. 8e in a taxi to La Orotava or a few euros on the bus. About 40 min bus ride to Santa Cruz.

Apartments Casablanca are my choice but make sure you get the correct room for you, some people prefer inside rooms over the bar and pool but I prefer the outside looking towards Mount Teide.
