We are 2 couples, mid to late 60's, just beginning to plan a tip to Santander and northern Spain for mid September. I've looked at the ferry schedules and times from Portsmouth to Santander and wonder if we might be better taking the ferry without a car, using public transport for a few days and then hiring a car to go into the Picos mountains for a couple of days rather than taking a British car over with us. Do any of you consider that the British registration plate on a car makes us more of a target for thieves if travelling in northern Spain? I'm a bit timid about the whole issue of taking a car but our frind who will be the driver is very blase about it. Can any of you give your opinions on this and the fact that parking may well be an issue in the towns.
