En Route to Salamanca

Plane arrives in Madrid around noon on a Tuesday, mid-May. Will pick up a rental car and drive to Salamanca for 2 nights. Debating seeing either Avila or El Escorial on our way. Salamanca seems to have quite a bit to offer, so don't think we have time to see both on the way. Any opinions as to which to choose. Should we try for both or skip both and have more time in Salamanca? We have toured Madrid previously and will be heading for Seville after our time in Salamanca.

Thanks for your help with this!

I would choose Avila. The views of the walls are really impressive. The town is quite small so you can see much of it. Go to the Cathedral. Just outside the walls there is parking.

I would try for both or choose Avila. Salamanca is not a big town in my opinion and you won't regret stopping for a few hours on the way. Also, stopping along the way in various cities helps you get more of a feel for the region itself.

Thanks Ashley and Benny M.!! Will definitely put Avila on the itinerary and depending on our luck with on-time flight arrival, may try and work in El Escorial as well. Do appreciate your input!

Avila has very good restaurants. Check TA for restaurants in the city.
