just back, few tips restaurant

Hi just back fron 4 wonderful days in Barc

found some great restaurants

La Dolca Hermina on magdalenes 27 not far from the old roman wall on laitana. You can't book at this restaurant and a queue forms at about 8.15 and the doors open at 8.30 They serve great food and it is reasonably priced, so is the wine list. the house cava is great. After visitng this restaurant we found there were other ones in same group in barc La Fonda in placa del teatre and les quinze nits on placa reial. All have the same system, queue up and doors open at 8.30.

Was advised not to eat paella on the ramblas but it was great in above restaurants.

I recently went to La Dolça Herminia too (for the first time) and it has the big advantage over Quinze Nits that you can actually turn up after 8.30 and still get a seat. This was on a Friday night (30th Sept) so presumably it's true pretty well always. It is on Carrer Magdalenes just off Via Laietana near the junction with Carrer Comtal (Magdalenes heads off at an angle towards the cathedral)

At Quinze Nits it is advisable to be in queue soon after 8pm to be sure of getting in at first sitting. If you don't you'll have 1 hour wait minimum till first diners leave.

There is another restaurant of the group called Cent Focs at Balmes 16, between Gran Via and Ronda Universitat ad yet another on Aragó near Pau Claris.

Same meun in al and food is really good and very reasonable. Funnily enough though, my Spanish edition of Time Out Barcelona says their paella is the one thing to avoid!

Paella is a Valencian speciaility and not that common here in Catalan restaurants except those specialising in fish (mainly port/Barceloneta).

However for those who want paella, and who are in Barcelona on a Thursday lunchtime, it is more widely available then. For some reason paella is almost invariably one of the choices for first course on the menú del día on Thursdays (don't ask me!) . Obviously how good it is will be a matter of luck: our favourite fish restaurant is dire at paella so you never can tell.

A Catalan variant is Fideuá which uses fine pasta rather than rice. We actually prefer that.

Yes, Paella is from Valencia but we prepare another kind of rices like "Arros Caldos" or black rice "Arrós Negre" (made with squid ink).

Most Paellas served in basic restaurants are industrially prepared.

darren tried the black rice special at les quinze nits and he said it was absolutely superb. not my thing but he certainly enjoyed it. Also couldn't believe the wild mushrooms in the market. unbelievable . why don't our markets look like that?
