Safety report - all is good

Just wanted to report in on this topic. We have been reasonably careful - eg using money belt etc but been walking, taxi, metro etc with zero problems. Feel very comfortable here. Great city. Feels much safer than my hometowns of philly and NYC - where I am also careful where I got and when

So come and enjoy - exercise reasonable caution in new place - and have a blast.

I just returned and also felt all was just fine. In fact, I too felt it just as safe, if not safer than here in NYC. I was actually nervous when I went because of all of the things I have read here, but at the end of the day, I think that isolated incidents are blowing things massively out of proportion. I saw one person who was a little sketchy, may have been checking out tourists. Otherwise in Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, Toledo and Segovia I saw no problems. I heard of no other tourists with problems. I think things are dramatically exaggerated. I know people say that they mention it just so that people know to exercise caution, but honestly, I feel like common sense is all that's needed, and I don't need people fear mongering me for me to use my common sense!

Friends:

You are right. Using common sense and precautions are all you need. I have been to Barcelona several times and have never been attacked.

Those who are over anxious and nervous should just think of staying home. How can you enjoy a trip if you think negatively before your trip? For me the anticipation of a trip is much of the fun of the trip.

Also I think that all the destination experts of Barcelona are tired of responding to threads about pickpockets.

Can't say I had any problems when I was in Barcelona and don't see myself having any problems when I go back at the end of month.

I go several times a year, I'm lucky to be able to stay with a friend. The scare stories make me laugh, I walk all over the place, I'll happily walk through La Raval at night, no problem. Petty street crime is rife, the perpetrators are looking for easy (often stupid) targets in crowded prime tourist areas.

Keep your wits about you, your valuables hidden, don't look and act like a tourist 100% of your time there and you'll be incredibly unlucky to be bothered by anything.
