eating sea urchin in/around barcelona

Hi everyone,

am heading over to barcelona for 9 days right at the end of may. would anyone happen to know whether i am still able to consume fresh sea urchin along the Costa Brava area? i am a huge fan, and have been reading online about this - but it seems that sea urchin season only runs from january till mid april.

failing this, is there anywhere in barcelona i can find sea urchin to consume? i presume the preserved tinned version is easily available.

Thanks!

ian

Hola ian and welcome to TA Barcelona,

I'm a big fan too of uni although I hardly eat it in Barcelona. Preserved tinned version? sounds yucky, lol.

Have a look at the fresh food markets, like the Mercat de la Boqueria on La Rambla.

At Kaiku, a 'paella' restaurant near Barceloneta beach, I've had delicious uni and seaweed fritters. For most North Americans, it would be an acquired taste (ie they don't usually like it) but I thought it was very yummy.

thanks so much for your reply, i hope to contribute to this forum too after my trip!

all right, will look at the markets. i referred to the tinned version as apparently you can get canned sea urchin from Asturias or something. i'll keep looking around! 2 months till i get there and i am totally stoked.

hi,

about sea urchins....I don't know if there are some restaurants in Barcelona tha offers sea urchins....but in costa brava area, yes!! for instance there are a kind of gastronomic festival named "garoinada" (*) in the village of Palafrugell:

http://www.garoinada.cat/

and

femturisme.cat/ca/ruta/ruta-de-la-garoinada/

and (in english) http://en.visitpalafrugell.cat/welcome

Unfortunately you need to use the translator because the information of the first and the secon link are in catalan and spanihs...but there are the names of some restaurants...

Probably there are more restaurnats and cities in the area where it's possible to taste them

(*) sea urchins in spanish: "erizos de mar" in catalan : "garoines" or "garotes" or "eriçons de mar"
