Vall de Nuria weather in spring (May)???

Hello,

Can anyone help with advice as ot weather and conditions in Vall de Nuria in May? I have searched the web and through this fourm without much luck. Most of the online weather reports deal with ski season.

We wll be on a cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona and will have several days before and after to explore the area. Our normal vacation is in National parks, getting outdoors and away from teh city, and we'd like to spend at least one day/night in the mountains. Unfortunately, we can't pack for a cruise + an urban vacation, and then throw in boots and warm clothing for a snow covered trail as well.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If you'd asked the same question in 2014 I might have been able to provide an authoritative answer (based on one day's experience). My previous visits to Vall de Nuria have been in September but we'll probably head up there in late May this year.

If you're used to the outdoors you'll appreciate that mountain weather can be unpredictable and can change rapidly, but at present the conditions look fairly pleasant with today being the worst with a high of 10c but rising to between 19-21c next week. Night time lows range from a chilly 2c to 8 or 9 next week. Expect May to be warmer than April and late May to be warmer than early.

If you're driving, here's an alternative suggestion. We're staying for the 3rd time at Santuari de Falgars. It's an exquisite place perched on a mountain ridge on the south side of the upper Rio Llobregat. It's remote and isolated with beautiful buildings and in May the spring flowers will be out and migratory birds will be singing. You can drive from there to the Vall de Nuria station at Ribes de Freser in an hour after a splendid breakfast (the Falgars restaurant is fabulous). Also, if the weather is poor, you're lower down and can more easily find an alternative, like a look at the volcanic landscape of Olot, Girona or even (perhaps) the coast.

Thank you for the suggestion and the information . While normally we would have a car, for this trip we're most likely going to be depending on mass transit. The ability to take a train from Barcelona to the rack rail was one of the attractive features this time around.

Obviously that cuts your options down a little but it's a route taken by many and in the unlikely event that the weather is dire you can always stop in Ribes de Freser or perhaps Queralbs. My guess is that you will be fine.

BTW - there are some wildlife possibilities which as you are fans of the outdoors might interest you, including vultures, chamois and marmots. Should you have some time and inclination our trip report with lots of links to photos including the species mentioned above can be found here...

If you are going only for a day trip there's a promotion called Trenatura, where a return ticket from Barcelona to Ribes de Freser + rack railway costs 30e per person.

Lammergeier might be tricky in Vall de Nuria. There were hundreds of Griffons last time we were there and the migrating returnees should all have returned.

We saw Lammergeier from Pedraforca which is not far away in the Cadi Moixero national park and which rivals Montserrat in terms of natural beauty, but which definitely needs a car.

as a more expensive alternative, you could try the splendid Stephen Christopher

http://www.catalanbirdtours.com/

who runs day trips to the Pyrenees and who is very knowledgeable about the local Lammergeiers. He can pick up in Barcelona. He takes a 4wd for his Pyrenees trips and is apparently able to get close to these spectacular vultures as well as many other altitude specialists.

We're having our second trip with him in late May and are currently deciding whether to 'do' the Pyrenees run or to go for the more specialised (i.e. mainly of interest to active birders) species of the steppes around Lleida. If we hadn't seen Lammergeier a couple of times before, it would be no contest.

hi,

In Nuria you can see easy chamois and "muflons" (Ovis orientalis) (?) and marmorts. I've been there last weekend and there are areas with lot of snow yet...but animals are behind the main building ("santuari") and we see the "mufflons" : a large group with little ones also in the path to "Noucreus". Unfortunately the path was partially snow (as I said before) and you need specialized equipment ..we had'nt and we must to come back to the Santuari....In may if the weather is not good it can easy snow again, and you can find really low temperatures (below oº)...

Panda: what do you go to see in lleida? I think it's a little late to see little bustard, isnt' it?

Should be okay for Little Bustard, 5de8, although the Great Bustard will have left. Nirvana would be Dupont's Lark, Red-footed Falcon and any Sandgrouse but particularly Pin-tailed Sandgrouse.

Here's a record shot of a couple of the great Bustards we saw with Stephen in 2008. We got lucky that day because he's been in the area two days earlier and none had retuned to their wintering grounds by then.
