What are prices like in Barcelona?

Hi,

Off to Barcelona at the beginning of October and just wondered what the cost of things are like for eating, drinking and shopping. Is it an expensive place? Are we talking London prices etc? How much for a beer, coffee or average lunch time snack.

Thanks

Loads cheaper than London if you choose carefully and are a bit adventurous. There is no 'price' for a beer - it depends on the place. We had decent glasses of red wine in Placa del Pi a couple of nights ago for about €2 but you can easily find more expensive. Get a metro out to Gracia (try the Fontana stop) for lots of good places with great menus del dia and decent quality food - an note that the menu del dia often includes a beer/wine/soft drink in the price.

We (couple) had a great 3 course meal in El Rebost de la Plana on Placa del Trilla just up from Fontana metro yesterday for less than €24 including extra drinks. You can sit outside and watch the world go by or the parakeets in the date palms - or find plenty similar nearby.

If you're beer lovers, seek out La Cervesita on Carrer Llull in Poblenou (a few doors from the Travelodge, metro Poblenou and a five minute walk). They serve a great range of bottled plus 8 draft beers with a price range of €2.50 to about €20. Many Belgian, British and Catalan beers as well as a superb menu of US craft beers (these get a bit pricey but they've come a long way) and some bottles from the Danish Stronzo brewery which get quite interesting. Open from about 17:00 to 22:00 and closed on Thursdays. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly.

To whet your appetite, a few pics of La Cervesita and their products, here ...

All the bottles on display have prices shown so there's no risk you might accidentally buy an expensive one (Deus de Flandres is going for £34 a bottle in one bar I know in Birmingham - they don't have it here at the moment but would knock it out for less if they did).

chez:

The Spanish eat their main meal at lunch (1 pm to 4 pm). During the week most restaurants have a menu of the day. This includes two plates, bread, dessert, and a glass of wine or beer. The price usually runs form 8 to 12 euros. There are more expensive menus at fancy restaurants. Each restaurant posts its menu of the day outside the restaurant so that you can easily compare with other restaurants. The menu of the day is a very good deal.

For beer you can also try Ale & Hop for 10 on tap and Mosquito who had 2 proper handpumps as well. Both are in the Sant Pere area.

Also in same area is a place called Bodega Jane which is a wine shop come bar come general off licence. They sell wine from barrels and even had people coming in with plastic water bottles to fill up with while we were in there.

Sadly Barcelona is almost as expensive as London in many aspects...But having said that, there's a much bigger possibility to go for a "cheap" decent lunch in Barcelona than London. Menu del dia is usually quite good and comes at about 10 euros.

Totally spot on @Alexandra P... I do concur with your post. Barcelona might be as expensive as London in some items. Still, the range of options is also far greater meaning that you can find good restaurants as expensive as in London and quite good ones much cheaper. It's a matter of looking around. For info... there are about 12000 food-serving establishments only in the Eixample area... you're bound to find a few that will be good and cheap(er) :)

Do a price comparison at numbeo.com to have an idea on cost of life between BCN and LON.
