First time...A month in Spain

Any advice on what to do, must see's and adventures that will give an experience in the big cities, the little cities, and off the beaten track.

I am a very mature 28 year old solo female traveller spending a month in Spain in September 2014, flying in and out of Barcelona. Keen and open travel in every corner, however I like to take in the surroundings and enjoy the culture so less is sometimes best.

Love adventures, the beach, food, enjoy a fun mountain wonder, water sports and some vino will be enjoyed in moderation. I love architecture and buildings and arty markets.

Considering getting a train ticket to travel between locations. Really want to make it down to near Seville and see the South.

Suggestions for others dream itineraries more than welcome.

I'll be doing the Ebro/Ebre river area next September but more to do with some civil war sites and throwing in some Priorat/Penedes wine areas. Hopefully into Tarragona pre Barcelona and La Merce. After La Merce who knows, might head up to Bilbao as i think Easyjet fly to Manchester from there (only booked outward flight so far as inwards not on sale)

@Jon... some info -which I assume you might already have though:

guerracivil.cat/ESPAIS/CEBE-Gandesa-Guerra-C…

terresdelebre.travel/ing/RutesIPropostes/Con…

…gencat.cat/portal/…

lavanguardia.com/local/tarragona/20120826/54…

... and if in the area, don't forget to visit:

(as you already know, in 'rural' Catalonia English is barely spoken, so most websites won't have an English -and sometimes not even a Spanish- version)

Enric,

Many thanks. Already looking at loads of info, and yes i am aware that not much English will be spoken which i'll have to deal with, with hopefully better Spanish than i can speak now. Have a loose itinerary at the moment to work around as i will be in Barcelona for Catalan National Day at the start of the holiday so have to try and plan the rest.

@jon_hall... another pearl of the Modernism movement in the Ebre region has just opened its doors to the public today: la Casa Bofarull (http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_Bofarull). It's located in the town of Els Pallaresos, merely 5km from Tarragona.

Hi all

Thank you so much for the information, really helpful. I will look into a number of the above suggestions. I really appreciate the replies.

I intend on ending my month long trip in Barcelona. I am leaving the country on the 28th September so I can finish on a high and experience Festival La Merce. Given I am travelling from Australia, it is best to fly in and out of Barcelona. However, I think I will be jumping straight on a plane down south on my arrival to the country to start my trip down there.

Anymore suggestions would be very welcomed :)

Hi All!

The time has come to establish where I am spending my month in Spain.

After reading endless blogs, TA posts and reviews here is what I think I would enjoy... nothing is set in stone so would appreciate any feedback –particularly around time in Seville/Cadiz/Jerez and also how do I best make a day trip to Gibraltor from one of those locations. I intend on using a tour group for 8 days to visit Toledo/Cordoba/Granada/Ronda/ending in Seville to make this easier and seamless for the start of my trip.

Just a reminder, I love the beach, wine, mountains/landscapes and I’m a huge fan of architecture.

Trip is 30days/29nights in total - flying in and out of Barcelona for the whole of September.

Day 1 – Early morning international arrival into Barcelona - AVE train to Madrid

Day 2 - Madrid (join tour group in afternoon) (overnight in Madrid)

***Tour Group

Day 3 - Toledo (overnight stay in Madrid)

Day 4 - Cordoba (overnight stay in Cordoba)

Day 5/6 - Granada (2 nights in Granada)

Day 7 - Ronda (overnight stay in Ronda)

Day 8 - Seville (overnight stay in Seville)

***Travelling Solo (depart tour group mid-morning of Day 9)

Day 9/10/11 - Seville (3 nights in Seville) – to include day trip to Gibraltor

Day 12/13/14/15/16/17 – Train (or bus?) to Cadiz (6 nights in Cadiz) – to include time in Jerez, visit to National Park of Donana

Day 18/19/20 – Train to Madrid (3 nights in Madrid) – to include day trip to Avila and Sergovia

Day 21 – Train to Barcelona (9 nights in Barcelona)

Day 22 – 29 Barcelona –hopefully will be able to enjoy La Merce Festival + Day trip/s to Tarragona. Stiges, Girona, Figueres, Cadeques, Montserrat either on tour/s or by myself/fellow travellers during this time.

Day 30 – Depart from Barcelona mid AM on international flight

Look forward to your feedback

Cheers!

Can't help much re Seville etc. except to say that the local forums will have loads of info. Any particular reason for visiting Coto Donana? It's on our list. Dependent upon your specific interests it might be worth looking for a specialist guide to get the most from it.

The whole thing sounds like great fun,

pandachris - I hope it's fun! My interest in Coto Donana is because I love National Parks and coastal areas immensely. I am researching more into that area still however a tour will be the way I go. Possibly a 4WD tour of the National Park if I can find something suitable.

My time planned for "Cadiz" is going to be fairly unstructured with the ability to adjust as I please. From what I have read I will most likely love the vibe of that area and it's surroundings... if not I will simply move to someone new or spend time adventuring out to other areas.

Very much like my time in Barcelona - I will take it as it comes and maybe do multiday trips if something is enticing.
