In touristy places, yes. Off the beaten track they tend to be mainly in Catalan. English is widely spoken and with a few words a menu in Catalan or Spanish isn't hard to decipher. Many guide books include a section on menus.

As PC mentions, except for off the beaten track, restaurants will offer you the menu in Catalan, English and Spanish and often in a handful of other languages so you shouldn't have any problem.

Even in my non-touristy neighbourhood (Poblenou) I've seen some English menus.

There is also a very useful comprehensive menu translator that you can print off or download and edit to carry in a smartphone in the FAQs on the right of this page

Hello kpgclark,

Yes, you will find menus in English in most places and I'm sure you'll be able to try some really good tapas around. ;)

Have a nice trip!

Just returned from Barcelona and I have to say the most of the restaurants have an English menu or translations alongside the Catalan. That being said---there are a few things that did not translate correctly or it wasn't a familiar ingredient to what we would use or it was called something different. Also, the smaller cafe's tend to NOT have translations, for instance, numerous café have "bikini" on their menu. I still am not exactly sure what that is--I think a small sandwich but really not quite sure.

I wrote down about 20-30 food items on 2 index cards with the translation from Catalan to English and carried them wherever I went. Also cooking techniques, i.e. grilled, fried, well-done, etc. and condiments. Apps are a decent idea, however, internet charges on your phones is cost prohibitive in Europe.
