4 days in Barcelona

Traveling to Barcelona for 4 days in early July.

Please recommend must see places to visit.

What places are better to avoid?

What are the best places to eat?

Any good day trips? How would we get there and back?

Should we stay in a hotel or look for an apartment to rent?

Is the hop-on hop-off bus tour worth it - or are trains and cabs better?

We do not speak Spanish, please take that into consideration.

Is it possible to drive in Spain, if we don't speak Spanish (understand road signs)?

You seem to know very little about your destination. You need to do some research before you can begin even formulating questions...

You really need to start with a guide book.

As it relates to your post....these are impossible questions to answer.

"Please recommend must see places to visit."

We have no idea what you interests are.

"What are the best places to eat."

We have no idea what your tastes / budget is.

"Should we stay in a hotel or look for an apartment to rent?

Again, no idea what your budget is or how many in your party.

Etc, etc, etc...

Do some reading / basic research and come back with more focussed questions.

>>> Is it possible to drive in Spain, if we don't speak Spanish (understand road signs)? <<<

Most European road signs use pictograms, not words. They are usually self-explanatory and pretty much standardised across all countries.

Although if you are only in Barcelona for four days you won't need (or want) a car. The city is walkable, and the buses and Metro are frequent, reliable and cheap.

EuropeTraveler,

You'll find answers to your questions and a lot more inspiration by perusing the Top Questions to the right of this column. ---->>>>>

What places are better to avoid?

The lower part of El Raval and Las Ramblas. They can be a bit seedy.

What are the best places to eat?

Depends on your budget and style preference.

Any good day trips? How would we get there and back?

Lots of good day trips listed in the Top Questions. How to get there and back - depends on where you're going. In general, Spain's network of bus and trains is excellent. Barcelona's metro/bus/taxi system plus the 'walkability' of the city means you don't need a rental car at all.

Should we stay in a hotel or look for an apartment to rent?

If you are the type of traveller who prefers concierge service, choose a hotel. If you like to cook simple meals at home, choose an apt. If you need minimum service and don't want an apt, look at Hostals (with an 'a' not hostels). These are like B&Bs.

Is the hop-on hop-off bus tour worth it - or are trains and cabs better?

HOHO is nice to get a general impression of the city but I don't like using them to transport me for sightseeing. Better to group your sightseeing by area.

We do not speak Spanish, please take that into consideration.

As long as you can express hello, thank you and the international gesture of friendship (a smile), you'll be okay.

I see that you have asked the same question on multiple forums. July is just around the corner and you'll have to work fast to get all your ducks in a row. I wouldn't worry so much about what to see at this point. Focus instead on where to stay in each city. The best hotel deals are done way in advance (meaning 6+ months or more).

For sightseeing, have a look at the Things To Do page of each TA forum. Like this:

If you need specific help with apt or hotel selection in Barcelona, feel free to send me a private message containing your travel dates and budget per night in Euros.
