what to do with 9yo child , 4 days

Been there a year ago so done sagrada familia , cable car, sightseeing bus, fountain ( well may do the latter again)

Last time we were there we eaten in wherever we happened to be, was great to be surprised, This time would appreciate recommendations of particular places though.

I am thinking about beaches - any advise?

Would be lovely to get ideas about activities for a 9yo, I know I could find a lot of info online , would have taken time though and besides some low key or quirky places may not be easy to find.

we are staying at Hesperia San Juan apartments( I believe close to periferal end of Av.Diagonal)

Thank you all for your suggestions

My usual response is 'take him/her to see castells'. If you are in Barcelona over a weekend between April and the end of September there's a fair chance that there will be something happening nearby and if not then a short train ride will take you to some.

This is the famous Catalan human tower building and it is likely to be of interest because although this is a difficult and challenging sport, some of the key participants will be children, even younger than 9.

See www.cccc.cat for details and a calendar. I try to keep the "sticky" at the top of this Forum up to date with the next events as well, or just let us know your dates.

What to do??.... leave him home! hahaha!

Aside from PandaChris suggestion, which I believe you should follow, after all castells (http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/?s=castellers) are something you won't see elsewhere outside Catalonia, here you have some more traditional ideas for visiting Barcelona with kids:

I really enjoyed the museum at Cosmo Caixa. There's an aquarium and a simulation of a tropical forest inside. Barcelona Card gives you a discount.

They are at the edge of the sea. They extend north-east in an almost unbroken succession for quite some distance from Port Vell. The normal access from the centre is through Barceloneta. Yould could also easily take a metro to, say El Poblenou, and walk down.

They are imported sand. I've no idea about entertainment. I've never seen donkeys or Punch & Judy. Lots of people swim but I think the margins are reasonably shallow. Have a look at Google Maps for an idea of where they are. Platja is the Catalan word for beach. I think the beaches closer to the centre tend to be busier.
