arrive barcelona b/4 cruise

We are arriving from the states at 11:45 AM and don't embark until 6 PM. What should we do after checking in on the ship? When we return we have to get on a plane quickly!

Thanks for your suggestions and should e use just a cc or get some euros?

Tom:

You could see the Sagrada Familia Basilica, since that is the most important sights. Read the top question on this church and book ahead of time. You could book for 1 pm. Use a taxi to get there. Taxis are inexpensive compared to the US.

Use an ATM card to get euros. Be sure to tell your bank you will be using it in Spain so that they do not block the transaction.

Thanks so much! We will be celebrating both of our "55" birthdays on this cruise. Ugh! I am glad we can enjoy a little of Barcelona on the trip!!

Hi Kathy

Happy b-days! ;) It's a shame that you can't stay longer in the city, you're going to be missing everything.

So you disembark at noon and have to go back at 6pm to then taking a plane?... why don't you disembark with your luggage, leave it in a locker in the centre (ie. lockerbarcelona.com) and then in the evening go straight to the aiport from there?, it's a hell of a waste of time to go back to the ship -which is moored deep in the harbour- to just leave again for the airport.

This is important to know how long do you really have in the city.

From the docks where you're going to be arriving at El Port Vell harbour (there are two other smaller harbours in the city) there's a bus to the bottom of La Rambla, the T3 Port, which takes all together say 20' or so. But if you're going to do what I suggest above it's best to catch a taxi (15-20€) straight to the locker and leave there your luggage. It's located right next to Plaça Catalunya, considered 'the' centre of the city.

In any case, one way or another you're going to be left with little time, just a few hours so albeit Sagrada Familia, as BennyMalaga suggest, it's a very nice landmark, I'd recommend otherwise and stay in the centre, there's a lot to see while strolling the Barri Gòtic, El Born and also the famous Passeig de Gràcia, where Casa Batlló and La Pedrera are located.

You can pay with your ccard assuming it's VISA or MC from a say US state bank or bigger. If you're using a US local bank or other ccard vendors (ie. AMEX) they might not be accepted in most places in Europe. Just try ccards... worst case scenario you can go to a bank and exchange there -best not to use exchange stores, their rates are far less convenient for you. Note ccards are accepted in most shops/restaurants in Barcelona but can be refused for small charges, say less than 5€.

Thanks very much for the b-day wishes! The information you provided is wonderful. Now I feel a little more at ease knowing where can go.
