My family had a fantastic 3 night stay in Barcelona last weekend and our only regret was our short trip as we really wanted to stay longer!!
The city has changed enormously since our last trip about 12 years ago, I thought the city was well kept and the local municipal? had clearly invested a lot in the neighbourhoods we visited.
Stayed in Sant Antoni on Ronda Sant Pau, absolutely loved it, so many great restaurants, bars and cafes and within 10-15 minutes of the Ramblas and Placa Catalunya. As seasoned Londoners we took the same sort of precautions as we walked around as we do at home and boy did we trek for miles each day, didn't take the metro once! Kept bags close and zipped, avoided two different ladies with "petitions" and avoided being hugged or greeted in an over friendly way by some random guy late one night.
In fact the only trouble we had was my husband being elbowed out of the way by an elderly lady which left a huge painful bruise on his hand!
Also there are so many people standing around that we felt very at ease wherever we went. Really liked the beach area and Ciutat Vella too.
Next time we'll visit in early September so we can actual sunbathe too.
Thanks to everyone who answered my tedious question on areas to stay as it really helped with my planning. CG :-)
