Visiting Barcelona at the end of June on a tight budget.

Hi, I'm planning a trip down to Barcelona at the end of the month for 12 days with one friend. We're on a pretty tight budget, so I was wondering if anyone had any cheap hotels to recommend? Also, could anyone tell me what meals would typically cost in Barcelona and how the nightlife is?

Any tips or must-sees to recommend would be great as well, thanks!

So, this is my "fact file" for visiting the city in a shoe string budget...

ACCOMODATION

Check out hostals (different from 'hostels', hostals are small hotels with basic amenities: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostal) and B&Bs:

BarcelonaBB (http://www.barcelonabb.com), Hostal Oliva (http://www.hostaloliva.com/), Casa Consell (http://www.casaconsell.com/), Hostal Goya (http://en.hostalgoya.com/), Hostal Khronos (http://www.hostalkhronos.com/), Casa Marcelo (http://www.casamarcelobarcelona.com/ENG/), Hostal Que Tal (http://www.quetalbarcelona.com/), El Balcón del Born (tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187497-d2287…), Hostal Mare Nostrum (http://www.hostalmarenostrum.com/)

EATING

Check timeout.com/barcelona/restaurants/barcelonas… also notice that most restaurants offer a 'menu-del-dia' at lunch time, consisting of a starter, a main dish and a dessert for 10-12€ which is worthwhile from a quality-price point of view. As local law indicates all restaurants must display the list of prices so it's visible from outside the restaurant, many take the opportunity to include as well the menu-del-dia there. But since most locals take advantage of these menus, most restaurants display big (well, say a bit 'bigger', but not massive!) signs advertising them.

MUSEUMS

Use the university student ID card if you have one, in many museums/landmarks you have discounts (even free entrance in a few of them). Also, check their websites because many offer an open day once a month, normally on a Saturday or on a Sunday and some -the public ones- have free entrance every Sunday afternoon: timeout.com/barcelona/museums/barcelona-muse…

TRANSPORTATION

Probably the best choice for transportation within Barcelona and to/from airport is the T-10 travelcard (10 journeys for a little more than 10 euros): how it works here, barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/transport/bar… and how to move around here, http://www.tmb.cat/en/el-teu-transport and finally how to purchase a T-10, infocatalonia.eu/w/… But first have a general idea looking at the map of neighbourhoods, …wordpress.com/2012/03/barris_bcn.jpg and then the map of the metro, mapametrobarcelona.net/mapas-metro/mapa-metr… and finally the map of the buses, www.tmb.cat/ca/c/document_library/get_file…

VISTING OUTSIDE BARCELONA

If you're tight on resources, instead of visiting a specific museum or similar, you can visit beautiful towns/landmarks and stroll the area, maybe even bring some food with you and have a picnic somewhere. These could be some of these destinations:

GIRONA : http://www.infocatalonia.eu/w/2013/11/30/ben/
