Visiting at easter, will shops, restaurants etc be open?

Hello,

We are looking to visit at easter time, arriving Thursday April 17th Leaving Monday 21st. This co-incides with Easter.

Will some will shops, restaurants etc be open on the Friday (good Friday) and the Sunday or will they all be closed?

Thanks

Girona is the second largest city of Catalunya and very turistic, plus with the crisis they have basically said goodbye to religious hollydays, so I'm sure most(if not all) of the restaurants will be open, and probably quite a few shops. Have a nice vacation, it's a beautiful place.

All the shops will be open as usual on Thursday and Saturday. The tourist shops only will be open on Friday, typically those in the old town leading up to the cathedral.

Unfortunately, all the shops will be shut on Sunday except the bakeries and, again, a very small number of tourist shops. Crisis? No crisis in Girona, very wealthy area and, probably because of this, there is a very strict no Sunday trading rule for shops, in Girona. This would apply even if it wasn't Easter. You will though find the shops are open at the coast or in Barcelona.

As for restaurants and bars, better news, as everywhere will be open Thursday to Sunday. Monday though is the quietest day for restaurants so quite a few will probably be shut on the Monday. Again, this is nothing to do with it being Easter. However, you will still find enough places open to keep you well fed, just be a but careful if you have a particular place in mind.

Just to add that Easter Monday is a holiday in Catalonia too. So, it will be like a Sunday. Still plenty to do in Girona on festive days.

You can pay a visit to the Tourist Info office upon arrival, these guys are really helpful. There may be interesting special events or differnt opening hours at sites and churches, so better ask locally (we always do when going to Girona for the day, as the tourist office is on the way from the train station to the town centre, and many times we have learn about special exhibits, concerts or other events we would have otherwise missed,

Bon viatge!

On Wed the legion of Roman centurians parade through the streets and on Good Friday they do the same (both around 8pm) followed by the more sombre Holy Procession from 10pm onwards. On the Saturday the usual open air market is open in Devesa Park and on Sunday there is the Palm Sunday market on the Rambla.

Next Wed (23rd) it is St Jordi (nothing to do with Easter) which is a very busy day in Girona, streets of the city are very busy as people buy books and roses for their loved one.
