There is an on going purge of illegal accommodation in and around the city of Santiago, plus all of the Caminos leading to the city.

News in Spanish:

Galicia has some of the strictest rules in Spain regarding accommodation.

Coudl you elaborate a bit more on "illegal" and the impact for Pilgrims?

Illegal is exactly what is says not legal, uncontrolled, not permitted.

It will say nothing about the quality of the accommodation or the folks running it.

What it means ? Who knows as there are several scenarios. If you have pre-booked and it is closed you loose your money; or if you are sleeping there and the accommodation is visited by the Police you are thrown out on to the street. Again loosing any money you have paid.

Starting to happen in Asturias as well. There was a sports centre in Columbres that has been open as a hostel for pilgrims for the last 5 years but I am led to believe that this will be closed down this year. It was illegal because even though it is a municipal property, it didn't meet the basic requirements as laid down in Asturian laws.

Regards,

Mike
