How to spend 8 hours at the Madrid Airport?

Due to some changes in the itinerary we (group of 4) will be spending 8 hours at the Barajas Airport in Madrid on a Wednesday. What can we possibly do in 8 hours? Is there’s a place that we can rest like a lounge or something like that? Or a confortable area in the airport? I guess we will have to pay but that’s OK if we can get some rest after a 10 hour flight and another 3 hour flight to come! We will be visiting Madrid at the end of our trip so is not that we want to venture to the city unless we have no other thing to do at the airport.

¡Any suggestion on how to spend 8 hours in this airport will be truly appreciated!

I'm no help on Madrid. We had the joy of almost 9 hrs at the Newark Airport with a 6 and 9 yr old in August - oh joy. We were flying to Ireland for a year so had maximized our checked and cabin baggage so heading into NYC was not an option. We split up where we were at different points to make things seem interesting for the kids. And we spent a lot of time in Brookstone. Problem is we have to do it again on the way back this August.

Are there kids with you or is it 4 adults?

If you don't sleep much on the plane and need to sleep and/or shower, why not use a hotel? You could probably get 4 hours of sleep. Here's a map:

Some have rates (for overnight) in the 60-70 Euro range. Somebody may know of hotels with lower "day rates." For 4 people, that's probably way less than paying 4 lounge entrances and your next flight and arrival at destination much more civilized.

Instead of reserving in advance you could just see how you feel when you arrive. If you want a hotel, go to an airport information desk for help calling and booking.

Why don't the 4 of you share a taxi into the city for 4 hours and then return? Let's say 60E total round trip are 15E each for a chance to see some of downtown Madird. One of you must know some Spanish...if not one must be willing to do research and be the leader. It could be a lot of fun...the airport is interesting..but for 8 hours?!
