Renfe-capital one mastercard-work for anyone?

Hi,

I've been trying for the last two days to get train tickets using the Renfe site. I am trying to use a capital one mastercard. I've contacted Cap one 4 times now and they insist Renfe hasn't even tried to put through a transaction. Yesterday I was given the G001 error message however today I got to the select a seat page and then got the error message.

Has anyone had luck using this card or should I try another one?

Thanks!

mom,

See this recent post at #16. tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g187514-i126-k41…

You may wish to try the route of asking for a 'security specialist' at your credit card house, before moving on to other cards.

It would be good if you could report back if you do so.

Best wishes.

I do not have a capitol one card but a citi card MC. When you try to book from the US there will be a screen that should pop up asking you more security questions to ensure that you are really the card holder esp. when using a foreign website. Credit card banks are very careful about foriegn purchases. If you are using a Apple computer this could be the issue. I had to use my work PC, becuase my Imac (safari) would not work.

Example of internet theft: Went to Cabo San Lucas last Sept and my wife and I used a ATM in a store on both our debit/ATM cards about a month later our checking acounts were missing about 1500 USD a piece. Of course Chase gave use the money back, but someone from Mexico and Columbia had charged our account purchasing shoes and withdrawing cash and they did not even have our cards. ATM theft - corrupt ATM macines, Chase guessed.

We talked to Renfe customer service at Atocha station yesterday morning to find out what’s been going on. According to the latest information, if you have not purchase a ticket (in person) here in Spain, then you will not be able to purchase your tickets online using a foreign-based credit card (VISA or MC). It's a new system that began about 2 months ago as an enhanced credit card security procedure to protect foreigners. You can purchase your tickets by calling Renfe (VISA, MC or Amex) and receive the Estella fare (if available), but Web Fares are few and far between and may soon be a thing of the past.

From what we were able to learn, once you’ve purchased a ticket at an office in Spain, then you will be able to make any future purchase online as long as you use the same credit card. If the number changes, or you use a new card, then you have to start the process all over again from square one. This makes it extremely difficult for anyone making his or her first trip to Spain.

Hi txmom,

Have you had any luck? You were referred to my post about the difficulties I had last week. I had no success with Capital One Visa or Chase Mastercard. I too got all those G001 error messages. I spoke with both banks and neither had any evidence of any Renfe activitity. On a whim I tried a Chase Visa card that I rarely use, and after speaking with a security specialist the transaction went through. I think that it helped to have a "Verified by Visa" program attached to the card.

You may want to try additional cards besides Capital One. It's true that Capital One does not charge the 3% foreign transaction fee, but that doesn't do much good if the transaction won't go through!

I still haven't had any luck. I've called capital one 4 times now and they insist they have no record of Renfe trying to authorize a transaction. I also tried a Chase MC with no luck. I called them too (trying before and after I called). Today I tried a Citibank Visa. No luck. I am going to try calling them tomorrow to see if they show any activity by Renfe and have them unblock the account. I'll also ask about the secured by visa thing. What a pain this is! Why can't Renfe be like Amazon.com? Click click and you're done! :) If anyone else has any suggestions I am all ears!

Renfe is in Spain, Amazon is in the States. Thus the difference.

You can keep trying, but if your card is not Verified by Visa or MasterCard, then the only way you'll be able to purchase your ticket will be by calling Renfe, or waiting until you arrive in Spain.

We'll be checking at the station again later today and let you know if there is any hope in purchasing online for the first time using the old system, but based on our last conversation with custom service, it doesn't look promising.

Rail Europe is the option of last resort, no discounts and you'll pay a fee.

It was suggested to me to try Petrabax http://petrabax.com/ for tickets. They charge a commision, but they did answer my e-mail with ticket availability information.

I am not sure how the "Verified by Visa" program got attached to my account in the first place, but it definitely enabled the Renfe purchase to go through on my Chase Visa. I found this website that enables you to sign up with "Verified by Visa". Perhaps call back Capital One Visa or Citibank Visa and check with their security specialists about it. https:/…index.jsp

The latest from Renfe's customer service (Chamartin Station) is that the system was changed at the beginning of December 2010 and supposedly you are not able to purchase a ticket online if you have not purchased one previously in Spain and had your credit card verified. The verification process is only good for one year, or so they say.

I didn't say you can't use a Visa or MC, what I said was that you have to have the cards verified before you can use them, at least according to Renfe. If you were able to buy tickets online without being asked to verify the credit card, congratulations, but it also means that your credit card is already verified for some reason. Otherwise it means that the system isn't working the way it’s supposed to, which wouldn't be a total surprise. This is Renfe afterall. There have been so many changes the last two years it's hard to keep up with what’s going on. I think the problem with Renfe is that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing or thinking.

How difficult is it to purchase over the phone, assuming one can reach an English-speaking agent? What form of written confirmation of the purchase do you receive if you buy over the phone?
