Theatre - Xmas week?

We are looking to travel to Madrdi during Xmas week. The days between Xmas and New Year. Can we expect for the theatres to have shows as usual? Museums too during those post Xmas days should be open?

Will Xmas markets still be open those few days?

Also, is Madrid very full during that week or many locals try to get out of town and visit friends and relatives outside the city?

Finalemente, i would be traveling with my teen daughter. To visit museums, tour and she says to shop. Would barrio Salamanca make sense for us?

Gracias.

Most places should be open again during those post Christmas days. Darius and Gigi have established that the Mercado de San Miguel is open from 12 pm on Christmas day itself. It will be business as usual in most places the day after Christmas day.

There is a Christmas Market in Plaza Mayor, but this mainly sells Christmas decorations. The Navibus (Christmas bus) will operate until 6 January and is a great way to see the Christmas lights of an evening from 18.00hrs onwards.

Madrid will be quite busy as many people visit the city to be with family at this time but, don't worry there is plenty of room for everyone!

In terms of shopping and staying n Barrio Salamanca, it really does depend on your budget and the type of shops your daughter shops in! Barrio Salamanca is a very nice, upscale Barrio with some very nice restaurants and bars. It is close to the Retiro Park, and if you enjoy walking, museums, Sol, Plaza Mayor and many major sights are walkable. If not the barrio is well covered in terms of metro and buses. The shopping is great, but many of the stores are high end designer stores such as Prada,Armani, Loewe, Gucci, Tiffany, Louboutin, Carolina Herrera etc. There is a very large El Corte Ingles department store in Paseo de la Castellana, near Nuevos Ministerios metro which your daughter may also appreciate.

More high street, main stream type stores can be found around Sol/Gran Via, Calle Goya (Barrio Salamanca) and Chueca is great for shoe shopping.

Salamanca is a good place to stay, but even if you decide to stay in Sol or Plaza de Santa Ana, or indeed most of the central areas, you really are not that far away from the shopping in Salamanca. Madrid is a very easy city to get around either on foot or by the fast, clean and efficient metro system.

Perfecto. I did not know there was a Xmas lights bus. That sounds great.

The Rastro is open only on Sunday's? Is there any similar shopping fair that may be openon Saturdays or during the week?
