Cheap food in Madrid

Can anyone tell me where to ge cheap 1 or 2 Euro food in Madrid?

Is it possible in the Atocha train station? How safe is Atoche for hanging out at night? Yes, I am extremely careful and savvy.

Thanks,

there is one fast food chain called 100 montaditos in several locations around madrid, offering 1 euro small sandwiches and 1 euro beer some days of the week. Regular prices are not much higher.

Also there are kebabs, pizza to go, and tapas and bocadillos (sandwiches) maybe starting from 2 or 3 euros.

There is a Burger king inside Atocha, I think they have some small plain burguers (or cheeseburgers?) for 1 euro or maybe 2. There will be also some vending machines where you can get chips or stuff like that for 1/2 euros.

Atocha is safe for hanging out at night. But it's just a train station, so not a lot to do/see (there is a nice tropical garden in one side of the station, where burger king is, but other than that is a boring place)

Try some of the small local tapas bars, if you sit at the bar & buy a small beer you should get a free tapas as well.

1 or 2€ for how much food? If you mean a whole meal this will be difficult if not impossible. A tapa with a drink for 1.5€ is certainly possible,or a montadito... but you need a few of these to get filled. 3-4€ will be more realistic bare minimum for a reasonable amout of basic food.

Regarding your other question, Atocha is safe, as is virtually all central Madrid. You must protect your valuables from pickpockets, but violent crimes are very rare.

** grumpy ex-local mode on **

So, if tourists still believe that Mercado de San Miguel is "well priced", no wonder they charge such prices!

;-)

Mercado de San Miguel is nice, it can be an interesting food experience, but it is anything but cheap.

Museo del Jamon has a 1 Euro menu inside if you eat at the bar. Can get a few different types of sandwiches. You can also get a glass of wine, beer, coffee, or water for 1 Euro.

Two ways to save food money.

Eat breakfast at a local bar/cafe. Have the typical coffee, chocolate with bread, toast or churros, in certain cafes.

Eat main meal at mid-day (between 2 - 4 pm) at restaurants that offer menu del dia (10 - 11 euros or there are those offering less) The menu del dia usually offers, 2 courses, beverage (beer, wine, soda, water but not coffee), bread and a dessert) The menu del dia is not usually offered at night.

One of our favorites near Plaza de Santa Ana is La Puebla, which offers the above for that price, but no English menu.

Here is new website...but I didn't find any English. I thought maybe with the economy they might have tried harder for the international market. Cocido is the dish pictured on homepage. Served on Tues, I believe.

Agree with Belsaita on Mercado de San Miguel. Not cheap.

How delusional do you have to be to think Mercado de San Miguel is cheap? It's a nice place with decent quality food, but it's anything but cheap. In fact it doesn't really deliver very good value for money. Just looking at the crowd when you go in, you know what you're in for. It's not exactly working class folk and backpacking students in there.

100 Montaditos is what it is, but it fits the OP's request. Museo del Jamon is also a good choice. There's also El Brillante across from Atocha station where you can eat for not too much money.

Another cheap eat: the 'bocadillo de calamares' (squid sandwich) close to the Plaza Mayor. "La Campana" is on Calle Botoneras.
