Tinto con Limon / Calimocho?

Hi all,

I spend a lot of time in Andulusia where I love to drink Tinto con Naranja. I'm told it's not really known / asked for outside of Andulucia though.

However, I wonder, if I were to order a Tinto con Limon or even a Calimocho in a bar / tapas bar in Madrid would I get some very odd looks?

I can't tell if Calimocho in particular is really a drink drunk by the young and not by those who may be drinking at a tapas bar.

Typically spanish / local drink recommendations greatly appreciated, I'm not one for San Miguel.

Thanks

San Miguel beer or the touristy Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid?

I'd bet your fave areas in Madrid would be Lavapiés and Malasaña. Yes, you can order "tinto de verano con limón" in dive bars but the "kalimotxo" is usually only for the 'botellón' (open-air drinking gatherings).

Some suggestions in central Madrid:

Lavapiés neighborhood: Achuri on Calle Argumosa 21 and other bars nearby. Melo's on Calle Ave María 44. Tapas y Fotos on Calle del Doctor Piga 7. La Mancha en Madrid on Calle Miguel Servet 13. Vinícola Mentridana on Calle San Eugenio 9.

Malasaña neighborhood: Palentino on Calle del Pez 12, a famous dive bar. Casa Camacho on Calle San Andrés 4, try the 'yayo'. Madrid Madriz on Calle Fuencarral 85.

La Latina neighborhood: Cara B on Calle del Aguila 4. Marathon on Calle Calatrava 26.

Sol neighborhood: El Riki Taberna on Calle de la Bolsa 3. La Alegría on Calle Veneras 7 and other bars nearby. El Frontón on Calle del Doctor Cortezo 15.

Chueca neighborhood: El Tigre on Calle Infantas 28. Escalero on Calle Hortaleza 33.

Las Letras neighborhood: Nueva Galicia on Calle de la Cruz 6. Quevedo on Calle Quevedo 7.

Yeah, don´t order for Calimocho in a bar. Instead order "tinto de verano" which is red wine with soda (casera) or lemon, as you like.

Most Spaniards drink just beer, but some bars have "vermouth de grifo".

Tinto con naranja is not common in Madrid, but you can order it if you like

I'm no Madrid expert, but my drink of choice when I was there was vermut con sifón. It's quite refreshing and goes very well with the food served in bars.

Vermú con sifón is, IMHO, the best drink one can have in Madrid. You may no be an expert but you certainly have good taste.

tinto con limon or tinto con blanca are very common in Madrid as well. As for tinto con naranja I would say is not common neither in Andalusia, but I guess you can ask for it the same way in Madrid (and you may get funny faces, yes)

kalimotxo is usually not ordered in a bar, but as Revulgo said for botellona, although you may try as well and they may serve it to you.

Apart from vermut/vermut con sifon, very Madrilian, there are some bars with sweet wine (vino dulce), sometimes with flavors, like orange sweet wine, etc. If they have those, they are usually written in chalkboards somewhere on the wall.

You can also get a pitcher of sangria in some bars, but it's mostly tourists doing that.

As for beers, there is life outside San Miguel and other usual suspects (Mahou, Cruzcampo,...) Many spanish brands are producing "special" beers very similar to belgian ales and of very good quality. You may find some of them in bars. I like a lot Cruzcampo Gran Reserva 1904.

As for beer, head to El Pedal on Calle Argumosa 33 (Lavapiés). Lots of artesanal beers.

as for what it is, think of Martini Rosso as vermut. With sifon means with soda/sparkling water.
