Where to after Madrid? Some advice please

We are planning a 10 day trip in Sept and one of he destinations we are considing is Madrid. The plan is to spend 3 days in Marid then a hire a car to explore for the remaining 7 days. We would like some suggestions to areas to visit. We love Spain and have visited places such as Seville, Rhonda, Granada, Nerja and Jerez. We wouldn't mind staying in a couple of places to use as a base whilst exploring. We are in our mid 30s and love local culture and especially food as we tend to choose destinations based on the cuisine.

And advice would be great thank you.

For cuisine, try Segovia, which is the culinary capital of Castile-Leon.

You can also visit San Sebastian and Bilbao. The Basques are great cooks.

La Coruña has a great restaurant:

I'd head north. A proposed route might be: Madrid-Burgos-San Sebastian-Bilbao-Madrid.

Stopover in Burgos: awesome gothic cathedral, roast lamb and wine from Ribera de Duero. Good local tapas on Calle Sombrerería (El Morito) and Calle San Lorenzo (Casa Pancho, Mesón de los Herreros).

San Sebastian: a beautiful city and a mecca for foodies.

The city: sansebastianturismo.com/info/…

Bilbao, the largest Basque city: the Guggenheim museum and pintxos (tapas).
