a few hours in madrid - what to do

we are flight back to the UK from Madrid, we expect to get to Madrid at about 2pm and then our flight is about 10pm - we will have our hire car with us until we drop it off at the airport that evening

so we have about 7 hours to explore Madrid - what do you recommend?

we have two teenage children with us

thanks

The Prado is a world class museum. How about spending a few hours there, then have a nice dinner, and then go to the airport.

There are a multitude of things you could do if you wanted to.

If you could get into town a little earlier, you could take the Madrid Free Walking Tour which leaves at 2:00 p.m. newmadrid-tours.com/daily-tours/free-tour.ht…

If I where you I wouldn't take a rental car. If you take a Taxi from the airport to Plaza de Oriente (in the west, where the royal Palace is) and walk from there to the Retiro Park (in the East, on the other side of the historical city) you could have a look at all mayor sites on your walk and take a taxi back to the airport at the end. The total cost for the two rides would be less than 70€ and you'll get a much better look of the city.

Best places in Madrid can't be seen from a car.

Look at this list and see what you think. Want more description of each attraction. Go to right hand side of page, scroll down to "Sights" and click on second question. Below is the link to the first.

Another place to see if you do not have much time is the Plaza Mayor, one of the most beautiful squares in Spain.

cheers for the info - we will have the car with us and paying €70 for taxis when we already have a car is not a option really

the plaza mayor sounds lovely - do you have anywhere you recommend for a late lunch?

don't know what you mean by late as in MAdrid regular lunchtimes are between 2pm and 4pm. A good place that's open and running outside those hours, and it's a great place for tapas sampling is Mercado de San Miguel, behind Plaza Mayor.
