what is there to do on a Sunday in Madrid?

Is anything open?

Is it worth visiting the surrounding countryside?

All the museums are open on Sunday.

You can visit the El Retiro Park.

Take a day trip to Toledo or Segovia. Read the top questions about these day trips.

El Retiiro Park is amazing, we walked thru it for 4 hrs yesterday, lot to see, just a great way to spend time and minutes from the Westin, beautiful park!.

A day trip (Ávila, Segovia, Toledo..) is a nice idea, however if you wish to stay in the city then I´d second strolling round the Retiro Park. Always has a nice ambience.

Cheers.

Many bars and cafes are open, but, as others have said, don't miss Retiro. A leisurely Sunday stroll through Retiro Park, with stops for a drink or two, is one of the city's great pleasures.

most of things are open on sunday (monuments, bars, restaurants, transport, etc). Most shops (like for example most fashion shops) will be closed, but you will find some open.

yes, it could also be a good idea to go to the countryside, if you like countryside. it depends on how long you have in madrid and your specific interest in the country side.

The Flea Market (El Rastro) is an earlier in the day activity. The hours are 9 to 3 pm. 2 -4 is lunch/main meal time so enjoy that. Be careful for pickpockets there...but then, that is a precaution best taken in all parts of the city. Than walk to El Retiro, the park next to the art museum of El Prado, depending on interest and weather. By the way, El Retire is beside and a little behind the El Prado so you can walk in that direction and make your final decision at the last moment.
