Three weeks in Spain and Portugal

Hi there! We are a couple in our early 50s, still quite energetic and wishing to spend some weeks in Spain and Portugal during the month of October. We are starting and ending our holiday in Madrid. We hope to fly to Lisbon for a few days before finding our way back to Spain to enjoy the bulk of our holidays (perhaps anticlockwise from down south of Spain and up to Barcelona then back to Madrid). Can anyone suggest an itinerary for us please? We look forward to trying the tapas, visiting some of the local bar, local markets, museums and cathedrals etc as we enjoy art and culture. Also, we would appreciate it if you are able to recommend the best form of transportation from on place to the next. Thanking you in advance.

hi,

If you are already visiting Portugal before starting the Spain tour. i would suggest you the following tour in Spain.

Madrid-Salamanca, Bus

Salamanca- Caceres, Bus

Caceres-Merida, Bus

Merida-Seville, Bus

Sevilla- Cordoba, Train

Corodoba-Granada Bus

Granada- Malaga, Bus

Malaga-Valencia, bus, train

Valencia-Tarragona, Bus, Train

Tarragona-Barcelona, Bus, train.

You can skip or add destinations according to your choices. You can also choose to do a part by renting a car then other in the public transport.

Hope you enjoy your vacation in Spain.

I'd add Merida and Trujillo to the Caceres portion. When we lived in Madrid we did a road trip with my mother where we went from Madrid to Trujillo, then to Caceres and then to Evora (gorgeous!) and then Merida on the way back. We did it in one week so that's not as much time, but they are lovely stops. Driving is quite easy in Spain and it's nice to be able to go at your own pace.

grapple:

You do not say how much time you have for your trip.

I would fly from Lisbon to Seville with Vueling. Stay 3 days in Seville.

Fly to Barcelona and stay 4 days.

Take the AVE to Madrid and stay 4 days. Read Buying Renfe Tickets Online.

Thank you all for your recommendations. As we are traveling from Madrid to Lisbon first then back to Spain, we will most probably use the suggested itinerary in the reverse order. @BennyMalaga we are planning to visit Portugal for 4 - 5 days and a little over two weeks in Spain.
