Hotels in Sol, Callao and Atocha, mid week in September 2013

I have an appointment with the British consulate.

I am travelling alone by train to Madrid and at this moment am thinking of spending a week there. Would appreciate any help in looking for a hotel with easy access to cabs, safe and convenient to roam about. I am looking into either a 3 or 4 star hotel in a good and safe location.

Is there a group for solo travellers in Madrid where I can touch base with prior to my trip?.

I have not booked my train tickets.

I have been to Barcelona but would like to take a side trip from Madrid too.

Appreciate any help and tips for a single woman traveller.

Many thanks.

Catalonia Las Cortes stands out in my mind for that area (always a lot of cabs right there on Plaza Santa Ana). Also the Hotel Liabeny which is right in Sol. Posada del Peine is on Calle Postas right near the Plaza Mayor. Julia Tours are well liked as tours for day trips.

Yvonne:

I always stay at the Melia Galgos in the Barrio Salamanca. This is the safest barrio with plenty of security. You can go out at night in this barrio and feel perfectly safe. Calle Serrano is half a block away and is the best shopping street. Nearby is a wonderful restaurant, Jose Luis (Serrano, 89) know for its tapas. This hotel is the hotel with the best breakfast buffet I have tried in Spain.

BennyMalaga or anyone, I am at a lost in selecting the terminating station in Madrid from Cadiz. There are three options:

1. Madrid Atocha Cercanias

2. Madrid - Principe Rio

3 Madrid - Puerto de Atocha

Many thanks.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I have booked my train tickets with ease and managed to book into Hotel Liabeny too.
