Madrid ( or Madinat Magrit, or Mayrit) used to be an important place for Cordoba's Emirate; it was located near the Christian border, therefore its strategic importance as a guard and security place.

It is a not well known fact, actually. Madrid is visited for a lot of things, and this is one more to add to the fabulous list.
