Exchanging pesetas for euros

I will be in Madrid soon and have found an old stash of American Express travellers checks and a few bills in pesetas. Is there any place in Madrid to exchange these?

Unlikely. Travellers' cheques normally expire after 12 months, and the euro has been Spain's currency for more than 11 years.

Laurie:

The Banco de España is located at Calle Alcalá, 48. It will change pesetas to euros. How many pesetas do you have? The exchange rate was 160 pesetas to one euro.

I have 15,000 pesetas in Thomas Cook Euro Travellers Cheques, 8,000 in paper money and 1,600 in coin. There are no dates on the travellers checks and no indication of expiration date.

Not sure but… as far as I heard, the Banco de España only exchange "cash pesetas" --banknotes and coins-- not travelers checks.

I have changed pesetas to euros at the Banco de Espana listed above, which is across from the Cibeles fountain and the old Correos/Post Office/present City Hall. I would say the same as others. Cash will be changed...travelers' checks and coins???

Let us know what happens, please.

According to American Express, their travellers cheques do not expire: www.americanexpress.com/uk/tc/faqs.shtml#6

Perhaps you should contact them to see about converting them?
